My husband taught me a great trick for getting rid of hiccups. Take a large glass of water and a butter knife. Place the butter knife in the glass and set the knife on your forehead. Drink the entire glass, keeping the knife on your forehead. Your hiccups will be gone. I think this works because it maintains the angle of your throat.
Another more drastic trick my husband has is to put a finger down your throat, like you are trying to induce vomiting. The reflex will stop the spasm, but sometimes will cause you to throw up, so try the knife trick first.
I prefer a spoon full of honey instead of sugar, better flavor and already liquid.
If someone gets the hiccups, get their attention and then say, "I'll give you 5 bucks if you hiccup again." It stops it every time.
