Remedy for Chihuahua with Itchy Skin?

Remedy for Chihuahua with Itchy Skin - closeup of dogI have a 10 year old Chihuahua. She had some fleas on her about a week ago now. I didn't notice it until after I gave her a regular bath. So I combed her out with a flea comb and put Advantage on her. While I comb every day, I waited 48 hours and gave her a Dawn bath. I still check and can't find any more fleas or traces of where they have been, but my girl is digging even more. She is so miserable. I don't see dry skin. She has some sores where she has been digging. I have tried oatmeal spray, oatmeal bath, organic aloe gel, and chlorhexidine PS shampoo. All with no luck. She is still miserable. Anybody have any other suggestions?

Try coconut oil.

Thank you. Princess is doing much better now. I hated seeing her suffering.

You can try multiple safe remedies but start off with one at a time, spacing them several days apart just in case she has a reaction to one of them. This makes it easy to identify which one it most likely is.

* Put a drop of coconut oil on her nose twice a day. She will lick it off and it's the best way to control how much she is getting.
* Ask your veterinarian how to safely dose liquid Benadryl for a few days to control the histamines that are causing her to itch so much.
* Rub a small amount of Vitamin E oil into her coat several times a week. Don't overuse it, especially if she licks it.
* Don't over bathe her, as this strips her skin of its natural oil.

Thank you for all your tips. Very helpful. The vet was finally able to get Princess in today. Is was allergic reaction to the flea bites. As the fleas are all gone.

Where the had bit her, they put their toxin under her skin. Vet gave Princess a shot for it. She is doing a lot better already.

It sounds to me like she may have developed some dry skin or possibly a couple "hot spots". Talk to your Vet about remedies. These are pretty common problems. Have you changed her food in the last few weeks? A food allergy can act like this.

Thank you. It was an allergy. It was an allergy to flea bites. The fleas where gone but was allergic to where they bit her.

When our fur boy had bites, the vet said he was a candidate for using human (liquid child) Benedryl to help with the itchies. Maybe your vet could give you the same recommendation and tell you how much is OK for your little guy!!

It worked VERY well for our Clarence. He still gets it periodically has he is allergic to a number of things. The flea bites were the worst. Poor little guy! Sending up healing prayers for your baby!
