I have a musty smell in the basement. Stuff that is stored in plastic containers has an odor too. We have a dehumidifier and there is no visible water problem there.

It is really, really hard to get rid of that issue. We have a super size dehumidifier and it helps some.
Getting rid of any cardboard or paper in the basement helped and not keeping anything fabric (even in plastic) helped.
Anything "porous" holds that musty smell and makes it harder to get rid of...it becomes a vicious cycle of smell.
Have you had someone check your foundation for water in the walls? That may be part of the issue also...so you are not seeing visible water, but it is getting in through the foundation.
The other thing is sometimes that smell comes up from the floor drain (if you have one) and it pays to put baking soda and vinegar down it every few months followed by a pot of boiling water.'
I hope it is not a foundation issue. That is costly.
If your foundation gets a clean bill of healthy, sometimes a good scrub down of the walls (if they are block walls) and painting with Kiln or another anti-mold/anti-water paint helps freshen the space.
If you have windows down there, be sure to keep them open when you are painting and wear a mask so you don't breathe the fumes.
Sometimes just getting rid of cardboard and paper will help tremendously!
You could have water vapor coming up from the floor. Use a dehumidifier more often.
You have an issue with some type of moisture,to help with the smell, try this great product called space bags.It sucks the air out of the bag using a vacuum, until flat.Locking all air out and no air smells in!
