After using the washing machine I keep the door ajar. Several hours or longer later there is a musty odor from the machine and in the inside. Any solutions? The machine is three years old and besides that I really like it.

Save or buy a spray bottle, fill it with a mix of 3 parts white vinegar and 1 part water, and spritz the inside of the washer each time you use it.... make sure to prop door open each time. Works great in mine, and because it isn't bleach, no worries about getting it on the next load of wash.
Run a cycle or 2 with 2cups of bleach only , to your washer. Bleach is like a sanitizer/disinfectant , this will act on the smells and build up.
This odor problem is so widespread that they now produce laundry products just for this.
My son purchased a new HE machine and I did a lot of research so he would not have this problem.
The following is a list of suggestions I prepared for him and he only does some of these but he has no odor problem.
1.) Mix 1/4 cup baking soda with 1/4 cup water. Add this solution to your machine's detergent container. This can be done instead of laundry detergent once in a while to eliminate soap scums.
2.) Pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the drum, run a normal cycle at high heat - without clothes.
3.) Use detergents made for HE machines as regular detergents usually make more suds than a front-loader can handle.
4.) Liquid fabric softener should not be used in HE machines use white vinegar instead.
5.) On a regular basis at least once per month - remove any debris you see trapped in the gasket and wipe it down with a cleaning solution made of one part white vinegar and one part water.
6.) Clean HE machines drain trap filter at least once every week or two.
7.) Do not use dry powders in your machine dispenser but you can sprinkle 1/2 cup baking soda into the empty washer tub before adding clothes.
Great list but I'm not sure about the last one. I actually fixed my smelly washer problem by switching to dry laundry detergent. I've been using the Kirkland brand from Costco in my front loader for years with no smells.
