We bought a house with a well in Columbus, Ohio. We have a water softener. We had a horrible smell when we moved in. We added a filter with charcoal and then added one with kdf85 and kdf55 media. The smell went away for a little while. When it came back we put a sediment filter between the pump and the softener and now it smells worse than ever. Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this?

I saw a crazy story once that there was a house where the water not only smelled bad but had a crazy taste. It turned out that in the house basement had a snake's nest, and that this was infecting the water supply. The poor people had to move out!
I really hope you had the well water tested when you moved in to make sure there were no pathogens or other contaminants.
it's weird that the smell went away and then came back with a vengeance, it's almost as if the filters were keeping whatever sediment and product was causing the smell at bay, so it was accumulating, instead of actually getting rid of the soruce. Makes me think it is an actual contaminant of some sort.
bad rusting pipes can also cause an odour
