I teach early morning fitness classes. There are a few smaller items I need to remember to bring each morning, in addition to larger equipment. To make things simple, I purchased a place mat from the dollar store. I traced - with permanent marker - the outline of each item onto the placemat. Some of the items are: wristwatch; interval timer; hair clip; workout gloves; belt bag; cell phone, water bottle; keys; etc. The night before, I put all items in their proper space and then it's easy to see that I have all the smaller items ready to go. It's simpler than a checklist because with a glance, one can see that all is in order.
