How can I get dog urine stains and smell out of carpet?
By Suzanne Talley from Atlanta, GA
The best way to remove urine stains and odor from carpet is to mix white vinegar with water (about half and half) and spray it directly on the stains until it is saturated and then shampoo the area that has been saturated. It will smell like vinegar, but this prevents the dog from wanting to use the same spot as a toilet. Then any time the dog has an accident in the house, immediately spray it with vinegar even if you cannot shampoo it that day.

The smell has probably soaked down through the carpet, the padding, and then into the wood underneath.
I didn't realize it did that until we pulled the carpet out of the living room, to replace with vinyl flooring. There were so many stains on the wood.
We went over them lightly with a sander, then wet them down with animal odor remover from the vet's office.
We had to wait a week for them to dry, but have not had revisits of the smell. (07/10/2010)
