Removing Dye Transfers from Clothing?

I washed a dress that has a combination of strips black fabric and mesh of skin color using warm water - gentle cycle. I added a couple of color catcher sheets, but the black still bleed into the mesh and colored it dark gray. I also stupidly threw it into the dryer. Now I am pulling my hairs and don't know how to fix it.

Will RIT® Color Remover help? Any advise will be appreciated.

Sometimes the only answer is to wear it as it is or maybe dye it all black. Placing it in the dyer only set the color run (which you already know was a big mistake but we have all done things like this and cried later).

  • I am surprised the color catchers did not keep this from happening but most likely you have two different types of fabric and the mesh just grabbed the black like a magnet.

  • Considering that your dress has been dried, and also the type of material that is the mesh, I'm not sure you will be able to remedy this.
  • I think you could try a product called Color Run Remover.
  • Caution: It has to say run remover and NOT color remover or color grabber and can be purchased at Walmart, Target, and online.

  • For similar fabric care in the future, I would suggest (and you may already know this) soaking any garment with two different colors (especially black) in a heavy salt and water solution before washing and never use hot water (cold is best).

If the dress is new, I would take it back to the store first. Then I would use the color Grabber.

I hate when that happens!

I have a couple of go tos that sometimes work.

The first is a vinegar and baking soda soak. In a clean bucket add 1/2 cup baking soda and 1 cup of white vinegar and enough COLD water to cover the piece and let it soak overnight. Sometimes that works first time out. Wash the piece either by hand or on your washes delicate cycle (by it self) after to get the vinegar smell out.

If that doesn't work, try a small spritz of regular hair spray in a corner and with a white cloth, dab at the bleed and see if that wicks it away from the piece onto the white cloth. Be sure not to have what you are spraying touch any other part of the dress or you could end up spreading the stain.

If it works on a corner, proceed up through the entire bleed area and again, wash when done in cold, by itself or by hand.

Sometimes if either way works, it takes several treatments to get it back to the white.

The last method is to check to see if Zout and an Oxy product are safe on the fabric you are dealing with and follow their directions for stain removal. Use them as a one-two punch if you can use them on your fabric. Sun dry the piece when it is done (NOT the dryer). The sun acts as a bleaching agent.

I can also tell you if it is a newer item and I still have the receipt and the store won't do anything, I go right to the company that made it and complain. I have had success having items replaced this way. The hard part is if it is newer, but already discontinued...then they sometimes offer a refund, which doesn't help if you loved the piece and can't replace it.
