I used an eraser sponge. All you need to do is make sure the eraser sponge is just damp and rub the area. Today, I removed felt pen marks off a varnished dresser; the marks had been there for over 15 years! They looked black but after 10 minutes of rubbing, they were gone and my sponge had turned pink!
Now all I need is my hair dryer or iron to remove the white water mark. Then, it will be a rub over with 3 parts oil and 1 part white vinegar. I have found this helps to cover up minor scratches and it will look as good as new.

This one worked beautifully thank you! I work with kids with behavior problems and you can imagine the innapropriate things they write. a few minutes of a good scrubbing, and gone!!
Scandanavian style desk top: Piggybacking on Elizabeth J's technique, I applied 50/50 mixture of Murphy's Oil Soap/water to the textured side of a Scotch-brite sponge pad and then cleaned with mild to moderate pressure the magic marker ink line, using circular and also back-and-forth motions. Then, I rinsed the area with warm water on a cotton cloth. The mark is gone and the shine in the cleaned area was barely dulled (hardly noticeable).
