I put a PVC protective cover on our table as our son was using it for study. When I took it off, the finish was sticky and books, etc. just stuck to it. Have tried a few things but scraping with a tungsten blade removes the varnish/polish not sure which? Can anyone give guidance how to proceed before I ruin the beautiful parquetry finish.
Thanks

Use De-Solv-It or Krud Kutter or white vinegar or baking soda.
Put on a pair of cleaning gloves.
Apply a small amount of cleaner on a soft cloth towel. If you select baking soda, then dampen the cloth first before sprinkling the baking soda onto it.
Rub off the sticky residue. Be gentle to avoid rubbing off the finish.
Once the sticky residue is gone, dip a cloth in some soapy water, wring it out so it is only damp, not dripping, then use it to wipe the area to remove any residue from your selected cleaners.
I would try a paste of baking soda and water in an inconspicuous spot.
Use Goof Off to remove the gummy residue.
