My dog got sprayed by a skunk tonight. Luckily there's a 24 hour vet close by to me and I was able to get skunk shampoo. I washed my dog according to directions and he still stinks. Anybody out there have some useful tips to get rid of the smell? Thanks,

Skunk Odor | 01/09/2005 |
I have two 80 pounds dogs. Both were sprayed with skunks, twice one summer. I was threatened with decapitation if I ever told who gave me this tip. Normal remedies did not work ie: tomato juice, ketchup, vinegar, baking soda. I was told to use douche. It doesn't matter what kind or what scent. It not only took out the second spraying smell but took care of the first one too. Imagine the looks when I went to the grocery and bought 8 boxes of douche, nothing else. The look from the clerk, well, all I said was, "don't ask". She didn't. The embarrassment was worth it. I stood both dogs in the tub, poured 4 bottles on each, let them stand for 15 min. and bathed with scented dog shampoo. It was wonderful, no stinky dogs. Had I known that the first spraying, they would not have had stand-off-ish family because of their odor for a month till the second spraying. Now everyone is happy. This really works.! By Holly H

I worked for a veterinarian over 30 years ago and that is exactly what we used, I've told many people about this, it really does work. The vet had us use unscented douche because it was less irritating to a dog's skin.

Try using beer, soak the dogs really good, let it stay on them for several minute and wash them as usual.

TOMATO JUICE! It will take any smell off anything and it's CHEAP! Professional chefs use it to take the smell of onions off their hands when cooking. Just saturate the animal thoroughly, let it stay on at least 15 minutes and bathe as usual.

Great post Holly, and very funny! I have no sense of smell anymore but I remember what a skunk's spray smells like and it is bad. I wouldn't even know about it unless someone told me but it would drive my friends and relatives up a wall. It should drive dogs up a wall too, and they should learn in the first round to stay away from those critters. Skunks aren't fit playmates for anything except other skunks. - Alph

You can mix baking soda, and a mild liquid soap, with water OR vinegar. Put in a spray bottle and go to town, let stand about 15-20 minutes. Repeat as necessary.

First time ever I had my dog sprayed... went to your site and it saved the night. Using Peroxide, baking soda and dish soap worked wonders. Thank You!

When your dog comes home smelling like he just had it out with a skunk, there's an instant solution. Take your pet outside and bath him/her in tomato juice really well. Rinse, and it's all gone, till next time. So keep three or four large cans of tomato juice on hand. Ask any farmer. It's the only thing that works right now.

Try soaping him up with Dawn dish soap and add baking soda and some hydrogen peroxide (the first aid kind from pharmacy), rub it into the fur really good and let it sit on him for as long as you can hold him down -- LOL. I usually just close the shower doors and let him in there about 10 minutes but I think most people would do it outside with the hose! Use the same combo to wash yourself later. Only thing that has worked for me. I have tried the commercial stuff as well as tomato juice and so forth.

Thanks everybody for your quick responses. It seems that its his facial area that is still holding the odor. I would like to try the Peroxide, baking soda, soap, water, vinegar mixture. But could somebody please tell me how much of each. Too much peroxide could burn him. If that doesn't work... I might have to try to freshen him up with some douches!lol

Try the recipe below: 1 bottle hydrogen peroxide Mix hydrogen peroxide with water. Add baking soda and dog shampoo. Mix and pour into a squirt bottle. Spray entire bottle onto your dog, being careful not to get it directly into his eyes and nose. Work it into his fur. Let it sit for five to ten minutes. Rinse, and your dog will have no odor. When he sits on your lap, you won't be able to smell anything. Bonnie

First thing to do that worked for me is spray with a half and half white vinegar/water solution on the dog. Then use 1 pint Hydrogen Peroxide, 1/4 cup Baking Soda and a tablespoon of dog shampoo. Work it in, rinse off, then treat again with 1/2 cup White Vinegar, 1/4 baking soda and 1/2 cup water. This will bubble up any remaining musk oil in the fur. It's the oil you want to get rid that carries the scent. Follow by a shampoo and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Do the same routine on carpet (either sponge in, work with a hand brush or use a carpet cleaning machine), bedding, collars etc. that the dog comes into contact with. Be sure NOT to get any of either solution into eyes, nose, mouth or ears of the dog. It will sting and make them gag and foam if they lick it. (If you ever whitened your teeth with Hydrogen Peroxide/baking soda, you know how nasty that tastes). So work quick and rinse thoroughly. The vinegar solution works by ionizing the sulfur so it is absorbed into the carbonate and is removed. Use this solution to clean up kitty smells from fur ball incidents as well, or anywhere a cat has sprayed. These solutions are cheap and work. Don't waste your time on commercially sold products.

My Lab just got sprayed 2 hours ago. I got this recipe from the 24 hr vet. WOW. It worked. She got sprayed right on the nozzle. I was told don't worry about her swallowing it. The odor was horrific! I almost gagged when I checked to see if it was out, and it wasn't. I did this and it was done. Hydrogen Peroxide ( i used 2 cups ) Mix it all, dunk a sponge in it and bath the dog. I rinsed it off pretty fast because I didn't want to harm her. After that I bathed her with her own shampoo, gave her a bone and she was happy again.

I don't know who Thrifty Fun is, but I must say that there are a few people in Texas who LOVE him or her. Four dogs, one dead skunk, you can fill in the blanks. All four dogs, one pasture, and the house all smelled like the Wrath Of God. We followed "Douche Plan" I found here. It's no lie, folks. It worked like a charm. And this was a very bad case. Had a similarly funny experience with Albertson's employee. When she asked what kind of dogs they were, my aunt replied, "BAD dogs." So now they are skunk-free AND Baby Fresh! Thanks again so much. One of the best Google results ever for me!
