Removing Stains and Yellowing on Christening Robe?

I have a 10 year christening robe with a milk stain at the front. The fur cape has also yellowed a bit. Any advice on how to treat this?
Thanks.

You can try taking it to a dry cleaner and asking for their advice on the fur cape. I think they have special products they can use on this to help take out the yellow coloring. As for the dress this will depend on the material and the washing instructions. You can try the bleach and hydrogen peroxide solution to soak the dress and then wash it after the stain is removed. Before doing this ask the dry cleaner if they can help you to remove this stain.

I can't give advice on the fur cape, but I would soak the robe in a 5 gallon pail of hot water. Add 2T each of hydrogen peroxide and powdered dishwasher detergent.

Soak overnight and wash as usual in the morning.

Material content will probably determine if you can safely remove the stains from the robe or the fur cape.

  • It is possible the robe will come apart/shred in the area where the milk stain is located so no matter what you try, I would suggest you be very careful and do not agitate the material anymore than necessary.
  • If you can lay the robe in an area that gets full sun you may be able to remove the stains by wetting the garment with a solution of water and mild soap (maybe Dawn).
  • If possible, lay it flat on a slightly slanted waterproof or plastic covered table top and wet it down with the mild water/soap solution.
  • Leave in sunshine for several hours and keep wetting it for a day or so. Leave on table overnight as dew also helps remove stains. A slanted table helps excess water run off but is not absolutely necessary but I would try to place garments where they retain their original shape.

  • Even plain water and sunshine will many times remove stains like this.
  • I would not recommend placing them in a washing machine as the agitation may tear them apart. A mesh lingerie washing bag may be safe but still questionable.
  • You may be able to do the same with the fur cape if it is some type of faux fur and not real animal fur.
