We just rented a house that was built in 1948. The kitchen cabinets had ugly and super stinky contact paper, that was there for the last 30-40+ years. Some shelves had 2 layers of it. The cabinets still stink badly even after removing all the contact paper, cleaning the inside and outside of all cabinets, and air drying them for 2 days!
It drives me insane, I open the cabinet and this chemical smell just smashes me in the face and everything in the cabinets seems stinky too! I tried baking soda, vinegar, cleaning with Murphy's Oil Soap, and putting charcoal bags in them, no luck. I am thinking about taking the doors off the cabinets to let them air out 24/7 and see if that helps, or buy storage shelves and keep everything out of the kitchen cabinets, but it really sucks to have a huge kitchen that we pay for and can't use! We told our landlord about this problem, she came over and said she doesn't smell anything, but helped me to remove the contact paper. Any advice? I really can't stand my kitchen!

it seems the odor has been there for such a long period of time that it has permeated the wood not only where the contact paper was but the cabinet walls as well.
Nok-Out removes odors. You can get it on Amazon
