I worked in a jewelry store and we always used Windex. If you have pulled and tugged on the ring, your finger might be swollen. Soak your hand in ice water for a while before trying the Windex. (03/05/2005)

Soap or cooking oil will help lubricate the ring and make it slip off easier. If your finger is swollen and the ring is firmly stuck the circulation to the finger can be restricted. If the above measures don't work most hospital emergency departments in Australia have ring cutting equipment to remove the ring before there is any lasting damage. The ring can be repaired afterward.

I was given this tip by a jeweler who used this trick for pregnant women with swollen fingers before he resorted to cutting the ring off: use hemorrhoid cream! It reduces the swelling and greases up the finger so that the ring slides right off. Then just clean as usual. (03/06/2005)

Slide dental floss under the ring and wind the floss around tightly and evenly past the first knuckle. Move ring up as you wind. (04/23/2005)

I usually put lotion on my finger and twist the ring while pulling. If that doesn't work try warm water and a lot of soap. (08/10/2005)

Windex? Windex, Windex. Windex! I tried everything, including going to the ER, Dr. said wait it out a couple of days to see if swelling goes down because my wedding ring would not be fixable. She said wait 24hrs keep icing it, eat nothing with sodium for 48 hours then see if it comes off. Well I was feeling a little claustrophobic so I read the ideas posted here - Windex and don't forget praying too! (08/10/2005)

Wrap a thick piece of string tightly around your finger, starting from the top until you wrap the string under the ring. Then slowly start unraveling the string from the bottom and the ring should come off (11/18/2005)

I spray finger with windex (11/29/2006)
These tips are great. I put an old ring on last night and my finger instantly started to swell. I soaked in cold soapy water, held my arm above my head and finally started spraying windex on my finger - it took some time but the windex did the trick. (12/19/2006)
Windex is my life saver. I thought it wouldn't come off, I was about to cry! (03/04/2007)

Windex is the bomb!
I just caught an infection in my ring finger and my engagement ring would not come off! Everyone suggested everything other than windex , the string, soap , cold water, hot water, saltwater nothing worked! So I googled it and this forum says windex windex windex and guess what? It friggin worked! On the first shot! Total believer! Thanks to everyone on this page! (06/19/2007)

I can not get this ring off! I have tried everything (except windex). I will try that now but it is making my finger poof and get red, it actually hurts too!
Editor's Note: Soak your hand in cool water so that the redness and swelling stops. Then keep trying. If worst comes to worst, go to a jeweler and have the ring sawed so you can remove it. (07/11/2007)

I am 6 months pregnant and my fingers swelled up so badly overnight I really thought I would have to get my rings cut, but the windex got it right off! Thank you! (08/10/2007)
My gosh! I couldn't believe how well windex works! I was trying all day to get my ring off my finger, and finally I found this web page, and tried windex! It slipped right off! it totally works. (08/22/2007)

I read this website thoroughly. I tried the windex which started the gentle slide upward, but then the ring couldn't get beyond the knuckle, so I tried the dental floss method. The dental floss reduced the swelling around the knuckle which was the troublesome area. Combined with the windex, this was the way to go! My finger sure is sore, but the ring is off! Thanks. Thanks, windex works. My 11 year old was treasure hunting in my jewelry box, found an old ring of mine, forced it on his ring finger, swelling and crying and everything. We checked the i-net, windex what a relief. Thanks again.

OMG. I put my ring on, and it was little tight. I fell asleep and in the morning, that sucker wouldn't move. I didn't have any Windex, but I did have Prep H. That and the string worked. Thank God, because I had a 5am flight. I couldn't image what would happen to it after a plane trip. (08/31/2007)

Thanks for the information posted about the windex. It really works! My daughter who is 11 yr old couldn't take off her ring. We tried lots of soap, vaseline, and oil nothing worked. Read about the windex and tried it - Bingo it worked! Amazing! Thanks so much. (09/19/2007)

Well, my ring got stuck on my middle finger about 5 hours ago (yeah, I was being a moron and put it on the wrong finger), just now finally getting it off.
I tried using soap, I tried using olive oil, floss, tape, I tried soaking my hand in ice water, holding it above my heart for 20+ minutes, trying to pull it off using thread no luck. Then I tried wrapping the thread around my finger in an attempt to force it to a smaller diameter. Then I tried wrapping my finger in electrical tape and tried sliding the ring over the tape.
Then I looked on google for additional suggestions and found the windex trick. It was amazing, it almost got it. It was a lot more effective then any of the other ways, at least.
In the end, I had to use a dremel and a cutting disk. Then, physically bend the ring and slip it sideways off (because by now the swelling was getting extreme).
Aside from a few minor burns (gold heats up VERY quickly), all is well. My finger's still swollen and sore, but the ring's off. To anyone who has to do this (or go to a jeweler and have them do it, I just did it at home because it's 3 am) I very much recommend putting something between your skin and the ring.
It's repairable at least. Here's to hoping nobody else has to do what I did.
And here's a picture of the ring now. Sorry for the bad lighting. (11/18/2007)

Windex - who knew? Why does Windex work, though? I used soap and water and also lotion-- nothin'. I'm thrilled to have my finger back! (11/18/2007)

I tried dish washing liquid and Vaseline both did not work so I thought about these cutco shears that I had and started trying to cut it it took me about 30 minutes but I was able to cut it then I took my keys to open it up because my finger was very swollen then viola it was off. (11/28/2007)

After trying everything; windex, icing water, elevating, tylenol, grease, baby oil, etc. I finally resorted to my husband's tool box and cut the ring off. I had gone to the tool box twice before but did not want to do it. When I noticed how swollen my finger had gotten in comparison to the others and the numbness I felt in that finger, I knew it was time. I still have the indent that the ring left behind. I figured, if the ring got stuck it's time to get it resized, which will fix the problem of my cutting it and I will get a ring back as good as new. (12/02/2007)

Windex just worked for me. I tried everything. I am 8.5 months pregnant and my fingers turned into sausages over-night. I lost all feeling in my finger and thought I was going to have to go to ER. After reading these posts I JUST got it off. Seriously hurt HORRIBLY but I did get it off! Yeah :) (12/03/2007)

My finger was swollen and becoming raw from all of the pulling and twisting. I tried Windex, Crisco, soap, WD-40, soaking my hand in frigid water, holding my hand up in the air, etc. Finally, I took some motrin, rubbed some Preparation H on my finger, and held my hand up for 20 minutes more. Then I sprayed Windex on my finger again. After a painful 5 minute period of my husband pulling on the ring, while re-applying Windex, it finally came off! I think one of the best tips on here that helped me most was where someone advised that it hurt, exceedingly, going over the knuckle, but to stick with it. That's what I kept telling myself as my husband was pulling on the ring. (12/21/2007)

I woke up to find my eczema had flared up overnight. I tried all the methods mentioned here including the ice water technique but after only five minutes I found my biggest worry was not the stubborn ring but frostbite. The Windex would have upset the broken skin and the butter did nothing. In the end a sink full of luke-warm and VERY soapy water did the trick and with a lot of twisting it eventually came free. It was that simple. (12/23/2007)

My wedding ring was stuck and my finger was red and swollen from my attempts to remove it. I was in pain and very upset. We were talking about probably having to get my ring cut off. Then, my husband decided to get on the internet to see if he could find a solution. Well, he did and the solution was dental floss and windex. I swear by it. (12/30/2007)

The Windex is a godsend! I'm 7.5 months pregnant and have been trying to pry my wedding set off my finger for days. I elevated my hand and iced the finger for a few minutes, then windexed away and they were off in less than a minute! Woo hoo! (01/04/2008)

After holding my hand in the air for 5 minutes and running under the cold tap for a bit, i tried windex, and it worked! it hurts, but just when you think it's not working, keep pulling.

Hooray for me! I have been trying for days to remove my wedding band for today's surgery. I just dabbed preparation h on my finger, let it sit for 5 minutes, and twisted it a lot and voila! I think the twisting is important, and owning the fact it's gonna hurt. All of the struggle is worth not having to cut my band:) (01/11/2008)

Got a thin wedding band and a triple wide ring, that is my set, but after not wearing it for almost 2 years (and 20 extra pounds), my size 4 1/2 finger gained weight too. After a lot of swelling and 24 hours later, I looked on the net and found the Windex answer, I chilled my hand a little and went for the Windex. It WAS somewhat painful, but the triple ring is off, some broken capillaries, and swelling, but its off! And the band will be next. After this swelling goes down.
Remember if you have tingling or a chilly or extra warm, swollen finger, or purple discoloring, this is nothing to take for granted no ring is worth loosing your finger over, have the jewelry store cut it off, (er's charge) you can get your ring repaired. Cheaper than your finger! (01/19/2008)
By Stacey
Let me echo the Windex. And yes, it hurts, but it does come off. Ouch. Note to self: wait about 10 more pounds or so before trying that again. (01/26/2008)

I had tried the soaking in cold water, floss, lotion, and nothing worked. Checking online was my last resort before heading out to get my ring cut off, but I saw the Windex idea and thought "what the heck, it can't hurt!", and sure enough, it worked! I iced my hand above my head for about 20 minutes, and then a few squirts of Windex and some twisting and pulling did the trick! Thanks, everybody! (01/26/2008)

Hi Everyone, An old Fireman's trick is to use string. kite string,or something smaller. You must wrap it tightly around your finger. You should then be able to slip it off. Please dont wait to long, You dont want to damage yourself. you can always call the fire house, or your local police for advice. Remember, they have seen it all. Best of luck! (01/26/2008)

Preparation H and a good twisting motion. Reapply PREP H and keep twisting. DON'T PULL, TWIST. rest a bit TWIST some more. Don't forget, there will be PAIN. But if my girl could get through it, then you can too. It seemed to help when she held the skin below the ring while I twisted it off. The worst part is the knuckle. (01/31/2008)

Okay, first I want to say if your ring is stuck "suddenly" (meaning you have recently put it on that day or day before) and it's a ring you commonly wear all the time and usually have no problem moving it around. Put it on the same finger on the opposite hand like I did ....WAIT! Before you go tugging and twisting in a panic for hours, give it a try once or twice with a lubricant like butter or soap, but then if it's not working let the current swelling subside.
I am 14 weeks pregnant and put my wedding band on my right hand to give the dry skin on my other finger time to heal. Half an hour later I couldn't get it off. I thought about this after but if you've had a lot of sodium in the last while you may be retaining fluid. I had not long eaten quite a few salt and vinegar chips! I got my finger very irritated and puffy after twisting and tugging numerous times.
After trying again the next morning to get it off (which was not a good idea as you are even more swollen at this time, wait till the afternoon), I decided I would wait a couple of days for the swelling to subside. I was still able to move the ring a little so there was still circulation. A couple of days later the swelling had gone down enough that while washing my hands at work I was able to slide it off with the soap, without much trouble at all. I had the biggest grin on my face..i was so happy i didn't have to get it cut off!
It would have made such a mess of the ring as it is a diamond eternity band (not good if it has to be cut). Good luck to everyone, and remember not to irritate it to the point of cutting off your circulation! (02/01/2008)

I was ready to go get the ring cut off at the jewelry store when I found these tips. For me, all it took was glass cleaner and twisting while pulling up (and it hurts!) But in less than a minute, it was off! I had unsuccessfully tried lots of lotion, soapy water, oils but I'm not sure that I was twisting. But I did wait hours until the swelling from previous tries had gone down a bit. Thank you all! (02/21/2008)

I put on a ring on my left ring finger. I got it on the night b4 then I woke up and I couldn't get it off. I tried using, oil, lotion, and windex, nothing works. The ring is still on my finger right now, it has really swelled up and my friends are suggesting that I go to the doctors. I'm 18 and in a Cabin in the mountains without parental supervision and my parents are miles away. I have no idea what I should do.
Editor's Note: I would call your parents and discuss it with them. If you are unable to do that, call your doctor or the advice nurse with your insurance company. Most have after hours people on call and maybe they can tell you how to remove the ring or when to be concerned. If you cannot get the ring off and continues to swell, GO TO THE DOCTOR OR EMERGENCY ROOM SOON! (02/22/2008)

My husband's ring finger became swollen after injuring it while lifting a box. That night it became itchy under the ring as he has eczema as well and when the ring could not be removed he became very agitated. So...I tried some of the remedies listed here and was amazed at how quickly it
worked. We waited until midday when swelling is at its least and then he held his arm above shoulder level with a generous helping of Preparation H smeared all over his finger. After 20 minutes I wiped away the ointment and then sprayed a lot of windex all around the swelling and then
using a small dry cloth I started twisting while pulling it off. It took less than a minute, was somewhat painful, but it worked! (02/26/2008)

Thank you, the windex worked! OMG, I was so scared I'd have to cut my precious diamond engagement ring, but now all I have to do is get it resized. I tried lotion, petroleum jelly, but no luck. I iced my finger for 10 minutes while holding it up. The swelling subsided slightly, I had my husband twist while pulling the ring while I continually sprayed the windex on my finger and yelling hurry, it hurts! (02/26/2008)

I have tried the string, soap, oil, etc. None of it has worked, my finger is now swollen from the attempts to remove it, and it hurts. It really feels too small to pass back over my knuckle. I'm going to try the Windex in the morning, once the swelling is down. If I have to go to a jeweler to have it cut off, will they be able to repair the ring without leaving large signs of damage on it? (03/11/2008)

Phew. The window cleaner does work. I was starting to panic and my finger was getting fatter and fatter. Tried soap, baby oil, freezing water and ice but didn't work. Gave it a few squirts with the glass cleaner and pulled and twisted a lot which hurt like heck but it did come off. (03/22/2008)

My fingers were swollen after I spent a few days in hot weather and I noticed that my wedding ring was getting tighter and tighter. I saw on this website that WINDEX seemed to work for most people so I decided to give it a try. It works! I iced my hand for 5 minutes and then my husband applied the Windex and twisted gently. It took a good two minutes before we got it off and I wasn't in much pain. I just wanted that ring off my finger and I didn't wait to cut it! (03/24/2008)

I had tried liquid soap before but it didn't work. After reading the tips online, I decided to use windex and pulled the ring while twisting and spraying windex. After a while, my finger started to look red and swollen but it felt like I was getting closer. So even though it hurt, I kept twisting and pulling. By the time I was half way through the nuckle, it hurt the most, but i could see that it was working and kept twisting. In less than a minute, the ring was off. Try it at your own risk and good luck. It works. I got my wedding band stuck last night and tried olive oil and it didn't work, so today when I got back from school I google it, and the windex trick came up as well as the cold water. I had to spray a bunch of time and kept dipping my hand in cold water, it wasn't too painful. I'm just happy it worked! (04/23/2008)

I was just about to go to a jeweler and have a ring cut off when I found this website. The windex worked! And, my finger was already red, swollen and SORE from previous attempts to remove it. I gave the Windex a shot. It hurt like I was removing my finger along with ring. But, after pulling and twisting and pulling the skin back behind the ring a little at a time it came off. It took about 1 minute and hurt like crazy. Just when I thought it was hopeless it pulled up over my knuckle. Thanks to everyone here! (05/03/2008)

I really didn't think that the windex would work, I really didn't. But finally after an hour of pulling and twisting it finally came off. You just have to decide that the pain can no longer be a factor and just keep pulling. OMG, I'm so glad that thing is off my finger! Thank you folks! (05/17/2008)

Just helped my mother remove here ring. She had injured her knuckle and it was badly swollen. We tried everything, including floss, which didn't work.
Finally, I had her put it in ice water on a stool for 10 minutes while she sat on the floor to raise her finger above her heart. I then had her twist it constantly while spraying Windex on it, and then I took a good grip on it and pulled and twisted like hell and finally it popped right off!
Remember, you CAN do it. Just use Windex, and keep turning while you pull. Also, if you have a friend with you, have them try to squeeze the skin under the ring while pulling and twisting.

We wanted to share our experience. My wife's finger was swollen with the engagement band and wedding rings on. We found this website and read all the posts. After soaking her hand in ice cubes, we used windex. Don't pull, twist and have someone else spray the windex while twisting. Took us five minutes. There is some discomfort but it does work. Good Luck (05/31/2008)

Glad I found this site. I have been trying everything to get my wedding rings off. I thought I would be able to wear my rings again 4 months after giving birth. I was able to get them on, but haven't been able to take them off for a few days now. I have been trying everything to take them off. I read this post and soaked my finger for about 5 min in ice water then sprayed the windex on and off they came. (06/14/2008)
Hallelujah! I never thought Windex would do the trick after reading about it here....But it works! And that was with my finger being badly swollen from having pulled on the ring for several days. Thank heavens for Windex! (06/15/2008)

Elevation, ice, Windex, and two people twisting. It did finally come off after about two minutes of twisting and squishing. Only to find that Ms Sidecar had somehow managed to bend her engagement ring. Thanks so much for the excellent advice. We are on vacation and it had come to the point where we didn't think we could wait till we got home. (06/16/2008)

Saw all these tips at work. Didn't want to wait until I got home, so used ice and tried a spray bottle of 409 I had in my office instead of Windex. The 409 worked as well. Hadn't had the ring off in 10 years and now I can have it resized (and my finger is disinfected as well). (06/17/2008)

I'm in Korea, too embarrassed to get this $%^&*&^%$ ring cut off, tried ice and vaseline, and my finger was quite swollen and purple. I put a pinky ring on my ring finger; forced that bad boy on. Idiot idea.
Windex, thank goodness for you. Ice, elevation, and twisting. It hurt like a mofo but the ring is OFF, sweet Jeebus. (07/02/2008)

My sister woke up this morning and came to me scared because she had been trying to get her ring to come off and her finger was already a crimson/purple. Both of her hands had become swollen overnight as she slept. I ran into the bathroom with her and got some soap around her finger. That managed too loosen up the ring a bit but it didn't get it off. We came to this website and I pulled out the bucket of ice water for 5 minutes and "glass cleaner" because I had no Windex.
My sister was getting more and more nervous but because I saw from other readers here that you just have to pull through it and not give up, I told her to do the same and in about 45 seconds we had that ring off her finger. I agree it is best to have another person around to help. My sister pulled as much as she could and when she was done, I used my two hands to twist and pull it the rest of the way. Thank God for the internet and this site. (07/06/2008)

Worth having a pair of jewelry cutters on hand--I tried all of the above to no avail, and was forced to cut my pretty ring. Now that it's off I see it was definitely the right thing to do--better lose a ring than a finger. (07/13/2008)

I, too, forced my wedding & engagement ring back on after giving birth and they have been stuck there for over a year. I used to try to no avail. I just saw the tip about the Windex, ran my finger under cold water for 30 seconds, sprayed it with Windex, and twisted and rocked the ring back and forth an it was off in less than 30 seconds. Great! (08/19/2008)

Windex was the answer to my prayers! Thanks to all the feedback from this website I soaked my ring finger in ice cold water for 45 seconds & then used the Windex. I twisted & tugged the ring around my swollen finger for about 40 seconds & it came off. My finger is somewhat sore but at least the ring came off without me having to cut it off. It is my wedding ring & I would have been so crushed if I had ruined it by cutting it off!
Thanks everyone for the great WINDEX tip~! It truly does work! (08/29/2008)

I really didn't think this would work since my ring had been on for many years and it seemed like my finger had grown around my ring! I thought it was beyond help and I'd have to have the ring cut off and ruined! But I did it myself with 2-3 squirts of windex. I held the ring with a paper towel while twisting as I pulled the ring off and about 60 seconds later it was off! It did hurt and I was worried before it reached the knuckle, but it went amazingly well! I am amazed and very thankful to everyone who posted here! Really you should give this a try, if it worked for me it should work for almost anyone! BTW, I tried the dental floss first and that didn't work at all. (10/14/2008)
By Ouch!
I tried soaking it in ice and then using the Windex but it still won't come off. Now I have a nick on my knuckle on top of a stuck ring and it is pretty red and swollen. Is it OK to put the Prep H on it if there is open skin? Also how long do you have to leave it on for? I don't know why my knuckle is so swollen, I don't recall injuring it, it is just very puffy. (10/28/2008)

Ice for a minute, then Windex, and slowly twist and push past knuckle. Hurts a tiny bit, but it does work. My ring is off. (10/29/2008)
It was 6 am the morning after a great Halloween party. Thanks to this website and everyone's feedback about Windex, I've gone and woken up neighbors to borrow their windex to save my finger. Sure enough the windex did the trick. Everyone is right. You don't think it's going to work but it does, pulling it off will still be tough but it will work, trust it. Thank you to everyone - you just saved me an emergency room bill! (11/02/2008)
I woke up one morning 4 days until my due date and I am so super swollen. I realized the ring I put on in place of my wedding rings because it was bigger was seriously stuck! So I tried ice and cold water, it did not work! My husband was like we can just cut it off and I really did not want to do that! So I relied to google! Thank you so so much Windex, it took not even 5 seconds and it was off! Yay! (11/02/2008)
After about 2 hours of trying the get my ring off by which point my finger had become pretty swollen and the situation much worse I googled it. I didn't have windex, so used shower shine and it came off after about 45 seconds of twisting and pain! I am so relieved. A very good tip, thank you! (11/09/2008)
The more you force and twist the ring the more swollen your finger will become. If after 60 seconds of twisting its still not off then its probably not going to come off! If any part of your finger starts to tint purple I recommend just getting it cut off. It wasn't too much money to have it fixed either. (11/14/2008)

Windex is amazing. You'll feel it working right as you start to pull the ring off. It took me about 45 secs. Just don't give up. but Windex is definitely the solution. Soap and water didn't work for me. Good luck. Scary stuff. (11/22/2008)

Woo hoo! It worked. I was skeptical. I tried the windex. Pulled and it wasn't budging. Iced it, kept it elevated then squirted with Windex again. The trick is to KEEP TWISTING the ring as you pull up. ALWAYS be twisting it and it WILL move. Keep spraying with Windex along the way. YAY! (12/11/2008)

Windex didn't work for me but hand sanitizer did. I soaked my hand in Windex, cold water kept on twisting and twisting, for hours...didn't work. But I tried some hand sanitizer and it came off in about 5 minutes. Hope this helps! (12/12/2008)

Thank you all so much, I had a ring stuck on my swollen finger and was panicking. I googled "remove ring from swollen finger" found this site and tried the ice and windex , the ring popped right off. I think the twisting was the key after the windex was on. I can sleep now! Thank you! (12/12/2008)

I am 6 months pregnant and swelling of my fingers seemed to happen overnight and I could not take off my rings. I found this sight and figured I had nothing to loose trying Preparation H - I had already tried cold water, ice and windex without any results except a sore finger. The Preparation H really did reduce the swelling enough to get my wedding rings off without cutting them! It's worth trying before visiting the jeweler! Good luck. (12/15/2008)

Well I would not have believed it but the Windex trick worked.
I waited till a cold day, hands were cold and dry, not much salt for lunch and sprayed away. These babies were way to small they don't even fit well on my pinky, they are probably 2 sizes to small. I had them off in less than a minute. (12/19/2008)

Windex! I literally tried everything. My finger was purple and throbbing so bad. I got to this page and tried windex and it came off in like 5 seconds! (12/22/2008)

Thanks for the advice, especially about the Windex. My wife came home after co-workers tried all day to tug a diamond ring and two bands from her badly swollen finger.
Upon seeing it, I thought we were on the way to the ER, especially after a couple attempts at removing the first ring.
So, as advised from this blog, we sat her on the floor with a bowl of ice water on the table and kept the hand submerged until she cried from the cold; about ten minutes is when the tears began to flow. Then we lubed it up with Windex, and I began to work the ring through the knuckle's bubble of swelling. She sprayed the ring as I worked it, and by working it, I mean "walking" it--using the nails of your index and thumb to grip, hold the ring in a north-south, then in an east-west position, and walk it, while pushing the swell back under the ring. Like in any war, don't give up hard earned ground, and keep marching it off. (01/02/2009)

Omg I woke up at 5 am in the morning to see that my fricking finger was swollen and near the ring it was green. I forgot to take off this fake ring. So my finger wasn't hurting but the sight of my finger swollen and that darn ring still on it made me wanna scream. I tried the windex. It didn't work. Now my hands are cold and smell just like windex. What should I do? (01/08/2009)

Success with Windex & floss-I could not remove my wedding and engagement rings for years, so I tried the Windex method on this and other sites. Hold hand elevated for 5-7 minutes. Push waxed dental tape under ring toward palm (1 ring at a time) and sprayed well with Windex. With hand facing down, pull both ends of tape around and around finger while pulling. First ring came off in 15 seconds, some discomfort. Second ring took longer and more painful, but success. Thanks for the tips. (01/27/2009)

I tried the windex and it didn't work. Howevert what did work was cooking oil. after pouring cooking oil over my finger and twisting it came off. but it was not quick and I could not do the twisting. You have to have someone do it for you. (01/27/2009)

I got a new ring stuck on a finger that it clearly shouldn't have been shoved onto. As my finger started turning that wonderful blood engorged color, I started to panic. So I found this page....I tried to hold it above my head, tried putting it in an ice bath, attempted the soapy water & the windex. Nothing! I called my mother, she said that cooking oil would do the trick. Thank God for mothers. After about 2-3 tbsp of oil dripping off of my finger, I was able to wedge the ring off. It did hurt like heck, I wont lie, but it's off. Thanks again mom. (02/11/2009)

OMG, I used a generic brand of windex window cleaner and it came right off. I iced it first to reduce swelling. What a relief! (02/14/2009)

I held my hand above my head while I was watching tv for about 10 minutes. Then I sprayed my finger and stuck ring with Windex and after twisting it side to side while gently pulling up, it came off after only about 30 seconds! (02/15/2009)

I got my engagement ring on Valentines Day and it was a bit snug, but I of course had to wear it! I had been trying to get it off for 3 days with no luck and was trying not to panic! Tried ice water, cooking oil, laundry detergent, hand soap, dental floss and even peanut butter to no avail. Found this site yesterday and was extremely skeptical about the Windex...it's not even slippery! Well, it worked! Sprayed my finger and as soon as I started twisting I could feel it start moving. I won't lie though, it hurt so bad!!My finger looks pretty sore today but at least the ring is off and getting sized properly! Thanks everyone! (02/19/2009)

Jeez that was the most painful thing I've done to myself besides having a baby. I tried everything, floss, lotion, hand sanitizer, lubrication, Ice, elevating the arm. Today I got Preparation H (the kind that says for reducing swelling, not the anti-itch one) and applied it twice until completely absorbed and then windexed like mad. It took about half an hour and my finger feels like i just jammed it in a car door, but I will never try wiggling on a ring that doesn't fit easily again! (02/20/2009)

Thanks! The windex worked! My husband kept spraying the windex while I worked the ring off. (02/26/2009)

I had a big ol' oversized ring badly stuck on my finger, couldn't put on gloves or do much of anything. I was getting myself psyched to windex/dental floss/ice, the whole bit, but first went to pick the meat off a rotisserie chicken I'd brought home from the grocery story. At the end, with warm chicken fat all over my hands, I was amazed and thrilled to find the ring slipped right off. (02/28/2009)

Wow! Windex did the trick for me. I had a ring stuck on my finger for two days and it really was starting to throb. I tried dish soap, veg oil and couldn't get the ring off. So I jumped on the internet and found this site. I kept my hand above my head for about ten minutes and the applied the windex. The key for me was to keep turning the ring as I tried to slide it off. It wasn't easy or pain free but the ring came off in about 15seconds.
Someone else posted about not give up progress once you start to remove the ring. Very true..once the ring starts to move add more windex and keep going. My finger felt better immediately. Thanks to everyone that posted...it save me a trip to the ER. Lesson learned don't force a ring on that doesn't fit. (04/12/2009)

Cocoa butter liberally smeared and rubbed into finger, then hold finger erect for awhile, then work it off. after liver transplant my finger shrunk and my ring kept falling off the ring finger. I put it on my middle finger and forgot about it for 3 years. Gained some weight and couldn't get it off. (04/30/2009)

It's been said before, but here it is again: OMG, Windex worked! I've been trying for weeks to get my ring off (it's been on my finger for at least 10 years) using oil, soap, soaking it cold water, holding my hand in the air, anything I could think of. Nothing worked and I was really getting pretty panicked about it. After finding this site, I tried putting my hand in cold water, could stand that for about 10 seconds before it hurt so much I couldn't stand it (have Reynauds), so I thought I'd just give the Windex a go. It took less than 20 seconds to get the ring off, painful but not unbearable. My finger is read and swollen, but the ring is off! Yay!
BTW, that's the second time Windex has come to my rescue. I accidentally glued two fingers together while making jewelry a few years ago, had nothing in the house that could get them apart, but my brother in law (the handy one in the family) suggested soaking them in Windex. I did for about 10 minutes, and my fingers magically came apart with the skin still on them. :-) (05/10/2009)

Score another for WINDEX. I pulled some "suspect" weeds and ended up with an itchy rash under my ring on both the top and bottom. With the hot weather and the fact I rarely remove the ring, my finger was swollen and the ring was stuck tight.
I held the ring hand over my head and grasped a Ziploc of ice cubes. After about 5 minutes, I sprayed the finger liberally with WINDEX and with some twisting and turning I had the ring off in less than half a minute! (07/04/2009)

You would never believe anybody could possibly get my rings off! I tried on numerous occasions to remove the ring but it wouldn't budge. Each time it just got more and more swollen to the point of being blue and bruised. I thought I would definitely lose my finger if I didn't get it off ASAP.
I couldn't do it myself so I enlisted my brother who has a firm hand and is very determined. He got it off for me after a lot of twisting and spraying of the cooling Windex. I shut my eyes so I couldn't see what he was doing and Voila the first ring was off. It was painful but bearable! Then the next ring came off straight after. In total about 10 mins work. Don't be scared, just do it. But get someone strong to twist it around without letup whilst spraying the Windex. (07/29/2009)
