Repairing Scratched Eyeglasses

Silver Feedback Medal for All Time! 450 Feedbacks

If your eye glasses get scratched, take them back to the place where you got them and have them buff the scratch out. Why spend money on something that you really don't know will work. Worse you might ruin an expensive pair of glasses. Chances are your shop will not charge you or if they do it won't be much.

Any reputable place will tell you that a true scratch can not be buffed out.

My next pair of eyeglasses will be ordered over the web. There are nice frames along with the lens available at half the cost - just know what size frame to buy and get a new prescription for the lens. Read below to see what I encountered.

Going back to Lens Crafters and asking them to "buff out" the scratches in my lens didn't work, they refused to do it and wanted to sell me new lens.

And now it seems the eyeglass stores are getting even more nasty with their tactics. They change the frames they carry every year so that the shape of the lens is different and your lens in your broken frame won't fit them! My temple on my eyeglass frame broke off a year after I bought them. I returned to the store & asked them to find another frame that would fit my lens. Again I was told that none of the new frames would accommodate the shape of my lens. What a racket! After complaining to their corporate headquarters I was given a new pair of eyeglasses & frame for $89.00 instead of paying $500.

It's time to let these company's know that we won't take this anymore!

While it is a good idea, I have never been able to find anyone that would do it.

Glasses can not have scratched buffed out without changing the prescription. If the scratches don't bother you it is no problem. If you are aware of them, have new lenses made.

Wow am I happy I read this blog! I had two pairs of expensive glasses that had crazed lenses. One had gotten spray paint come down on them when I was under my motorhome touching things up. Then I tried to get the paint off and it crazed the lenses.

I took them to several places and all said the same thing, "nothing can be done, you need new glasses!" And I got new glasses. Well, my new $300 glasses became crazed, and they are only 1 year old! Needless to say, I was not a happy camper.

So I did what we do in this modern world, I Googled my problem. And here I am. I could not find Armor Etch at Michaels, but they had Martha Stewarts glass etching goop. I experimented on the pair that had gotten paint, enamel reducer, and were a hazy mess. It was all on the anti glare coating! After gooping on the Glass Etch solution, and waiting the 5 minutes, I could not believe my eyes! They were like BRAND NEW! Now that I felt brave, I did my newer pair. Same thing, just like new! Thanks for the insight! Here is another AAA+ for glass etching solution on plastic lenses, it works!

Doesn't work so well if you, like many people now, buy glasses online.

I was told at Shopko that the light abrasion on my non-glare coated lenses could not be repaired but I could replace it for $245. So I'm willing to try some of these ideas.
