Repairing a Broken Tension Knob on a Kenmore 158 Sewing Machine?

Repairing a Broken Tension Knob on a Kenmore 158 Sewing MachineWhen my Kenmore 158 arrived, the tension knob had been snapped right off in shipping. I can put the knob back on, but it does not stay in place. There is no set screw for this model. It looks like there was a little tube that held the pin that broke. Can this be fixed or is the machine a total loss?

This seems to be a new machine. I would contact Sears and have them replace it.

This is a vintage machine but you should still be able to get any parts you need and also find out how to do the repair.

  • You do not say where/who you bought your machine from but if at all possible, I would discuss this with the seller as most sellers have to guarantee that a machine will be in working order when it arrives.

  • The seller should be responsible for having it repaired or at least for buying any parts needed for repairs.
  • But, no matter, you should Google Sears Service Center with your zip code and see if there is one within your area as they will be the best place to discuss this problem.
  • If there is no service center near-by then call and tell them what is broken or not working and see if they can tell you how to fix it or what part you need for repairs.
  • While you are talking with a service person, I would also ask what brand of machine you have (Kenmore is a Sears name) as this may be of benefit if you have problems in the future.
  • Be sure you have all of the numbers for your machine as 158 is only part of the number.

My kenmore machine did the same thing. I didnt think there was a set screw but I got a flashlight and what looked like a hole actually was a set screw. I loosened the screw, stuck the part in and tightened it up. Perfect! Or maybe your screw fell out. I found great pictures on pungolivinghome.com.
