I just received my great grandmother's sewing machine. I have really no clue about one this old. But I do have common knowledge when using a "newer" sewing machine. The place you would re-thread the bobbing does not work. I tried using it, and sometimes the needle goes down and it will make a weird sound, but it won't come back up and the thread breaks.
Please help.

If your needle is making a noise, it is probably hitting something. There is something out of alignment or the timing is off. Brother.com has customer support. I would contact them first.
Hi,
Have you tried setting the thread on the upper part of the sewing machine to a level four and then checking that the bobbin tension screw is not loose on the machine?
Let us know how it turns out!

It sounds to me as though it is a timing issue, i.e., the thread pickup point at the needle eye/thread hook point. The bobbin thread needs to be picked up by the top thread inside the bobbin case at the point where the needle eye is just returning to its upper position. This can be adjusted by loosening the screw that holds the entire bobbin assembly to its drive-shaft (as seen from the underside of the machine), and turning the assembly forward or back as needed to achieve this timing point. I have several old Brother machines like this, and once they are timed, cleaned, and regularly oiled, one can't find a better machine in this price range! I dearly love mine, and with some insight to them and a little understanding of them, they are rally hard workers.
There is another possible problem other than timing. On a couple of my old Brother machines the drive shaft on the bobbin winder was very stiff or frozen from infrequent use and no oil. Remove the top cover of the machine (2 screws) and see if the rubber wheel spins freely. If it does not, put a drop or 2 of sewing machine oil on the shaft and its housing and turn the wheel gently with your fingers to see if it loosens.
