November 30, 2020

My mower makes a purring sound and will not turn over. I replaced the battery, spark plugs, and air filters with no luck.

If you are turning over the key and it makes a purring sound this normally indicates that is an issue with the starter or the starter cables on the lawnmower. Anytime the starter will tick or purr there is a problem in the starter of a machine just like in your car. You can have your starter checked at most auto parts stores. I would check the starter and do a starter test. You can usually bypass a lawnmower starter and start the mower using a screwdriver. Try this to see if you can bypass the starter or the starter switch to make sure there is an issue with your starter.

It's possible it could also be your solenoid but that may just make a clicking noise.
There are just so many different things that could cause this to happen and it is difficult to keep asking question like;

have you used your mower this year? Has it had a good cleaning, especially removing old fuel from last year? Why did you decide to buy a new battery and was the old one tested before replacing it?

All I'm saying is there are so many variables that could cause this that I would suggest you talk to a lawn mower 'expert' as they would know what questions to ask and could provide you with step by step instructions on what to try next.
I have some links to lawn mower forums and these people really help a lot of people with mower problems (you see, you are not alone with this type of thing). You can decide on any one forum but if you do not get an answer quickly you can always go to another one (usually they answer right away).
You do have to join the group but that should be no problem. Keep in touch with them as you are most likely going to need them again sometime in the future.

Here is an original ad for a 1959 Jacobsen 24 Inch Estate Mower but I did not see anything for a 1957.
The ad provides a lot of information about this mower but does not answer your questions.

The Jacobsen appears to be a good brand but does not seem to be as well known as other brands.
I would suggest you contact the company and see if they can answer your question about parts. Perhaps they will provide a dealer in your area that you could contact for more information, and they might also provide information on value.
www.jacobsen.com/.../contact-us

There is also a link to request a manual:
www.jacobsen.com/.../product-parts-and-manuals

There are several forums that you can join in case you have problems in the future, as the members seem to know a lot about the older mowers. You will have to join the group before asking questions and most forums like to have a picture of the machine.

When searching for value there are several questions that have to be answered and having pictures is a necessity.
Where are you located? Mowers are rarely shipped, so where you live makes a big difference in value.
What is the cosmetic condition of the mower?
What is the working condition?
Value is determined by finding a sold item that matches your item. Since I have not found even a similar mower, I would have to say the present value of your mower is whatever you paid for it.
Perhaps another member will find more information for you.

I bought a Yard King Performance 42580X89 from my landlord. I went to go mow the lawn and noticed a large vibration and a loud coming from deck. The jackshaft threads are stripped for the right side of the deck. What can I do to repair/replace the jackshaft?

Talk to your landlord. He must have known he was selling you a defective machine.

I asked my husband about your mower problem. He says if the jackshaft is the part that holds the blade in place, you will need to replace it. The blade could fly off if the shaft is bent or broken.

While mowing today with my Craftsmen 15.5 lawn tractor the engine all of a sudden wanted to over-rev big time. The only way I could stop it was to shut off the ignition or choke the carbuerator. Now when I start it, it wants to overrev from the get go. I cannot throttle it back Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

somthing is wrong with the throtle governer. Sometimes its a mechanical type inside the crank case somtimes its a air vane type near the flywheel.

It may be starving for gas. Add C-foam to the gas. It will clean the varnish in the carburetor.

While I was mowing, the front suspension came off and the mower drive belt broke. After replacing the belt when I started the engine and the blades started moving, one of the pulleys was very hot, and the engagement handle was very difficult to move.

After a visit to a professional, the lever may still be hard to engage, but eventually mine loosened up. Not sure about the other implications.

July 9, 20110 found this helpful

Front suspension? If it came down? Are you talking mower deck if so, up front there are some pivot points make sure they are lined up. Make sure you pulled all the dried grass.

BTW you can get a big fire when the pulley gets hot. BTDT carry a fire extinguisher in back pack

I have replaced the starter drive on my Briggs & Stratton engine on my craftsman mower. To do this I had to have a special tool for the removal of the c-ring and a special tool for the replacement of the c-ring, which I accomplished successfully. How do you replace the two long bolts back through the starter. I can get everything lined up but can't seem to get the bolt close enough to get the threads started?

If you want to do your own repairs on your mower I suggest you obtain a copy of GREGORY'S No.426, SMALL ENGINES SERIES 2 SERVICE AND REPAIR MANUAL. To assist in identifying, there are four rewind type starters used Briggs & Stratton have names them Vertical Pull, Horizontal Pull, Quantum Power and Side Mount.

I have a 42" Yardman tractor with a 6 speed manual shift. It runs fine, no issues. The only problem now is that it will climb a grade at first, but the more I mow the less it moves until it stops rolling.

Reverse is no problem. Is the belt too loose after using or is there an adjustment?

I have located the instruction for replacing your belt on the lawn mower. You can follow the directions here: www.mtdparts.com/.../change-riding-mower-drive-belt

Or it is possible to watch a YouTube video to see how they do it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUTMrv_Ibvo

When I go to start my Murray 20 horse twin riding mower I hear a metal on metal clunk just before it starts. It only does it on the first start when it's cold.

I can restart after it warms up and I don't hear the clunk. Does the starter have to be replaced?

There are several reasons why this can happen.

  • Your brake could be hitting the blade.
  • There is a problem with the carburetor.
  • The engine has a loose part inside. When it's hot the piece has expanded. When cold it makes the noise.

If this continues I would suggest taking the mower to the shop before it does some real damage to the engine.

We have a older rear engine 36" cutting Snapper riding mower. It cranks and runs good. The moment the blade is engaged the engine bogs or slows down. It doesn't shut off, just slows really down. You can mow like this, but it takes awhile. We were wondering what could be causing it to do this? Thanks.

It most likely needs the drive belt replaced. It maybe stretched, especially if it has mowed wet grass

This could cause one of the electrical wires in the mower to burn. You should always ground the wires in case of this problem.

You will need to adjust your pulleys on the tractor. You have them in the wrong position. Remove them and switch them around. Make sure you have the pulley aligned correctly and the belts attached right.
