Repairing a Singer Sewing Machine?

I am super brand new to sewing, and I think I turned my hand wheel clockwise a little bit. I noticed my machine will not sew anymore, like at all. When I press my foot pedal nothing happens. What happened? I have a Singer heavy duty HD6380. I thought these machines were friendly for new users... :(

First off if you are pressing the foot pedal and it is not moving the sewing machine needle up and down there could be a connection problem. Have you checked the power to the machine? What happens when you power on the machine once the foot pedal is installed? Are you getting the light on the machine to work? You first off need power to the sewing machine to get it to work. If you can get power to the sewing machine the next step is to check your bobbin area and make sure there is nothing in there that will prevent the needle from entering there. A lot of times thread or material can get stuck inside this area that will prevent the machine to turn and the needle to enter there to pick up the bobbin thread. You will need to remove the bobbin, canister, and the housing that it sits in to clean this area.

Once cleaned drop 1 drop of oil on the back of this area. There should be a small disk or looks like a disk that the oil should be on. Now put this back together and try turning the wheel of the machine. If you can get the needle to move up and down again the area should be cleaned out. if you are still having an issue to get the needle to move then there could be another issue with one of the belts on the machine. This can happen when the belt is old, but I have seen your machine and I don't really believe it is a belt problem. You could also have an issue with the foot pedal and not getting any connection to your machine. Please check this too.

Thank you for the thorough responses, I appreciate it very much. Ill try taking out the bobbin casing to see if there is anything jammed in there. But, the needle *does* go up and down when I turn the hand wheel and it even sews stitches if I continue to do so. The hand wheel is not hard to turn at all.

So, Im thinking it could be an electricity issue, perhaps a short in the cable? The light does comes on when the machine is turned on, though, so some power is getting through. Is that possible, a partial flow of electricity?

If this is the case and you are getting power to the machine and you can turn the wheel then there is an issue with the foot pedal when you push it. The foot pedal will engage and allow the machine to receive the power to move the needle to sew. If you are able to sew by only turning the wheel then more than likely there is not a big issue in the bobbin area and it may just need a bit of cleaning. I would check the cable to the foot pedal and make sure it is securely inserted to the machine base.

I think it is because when you plug in the machine you normally need to plug the power to the foot pedal and then the foot pedal to the machine. It sounds like you have a blockage in your foot pedal that is preventing it from engaging so that the machine can sew properly. Please check the foot pedal and if you can't make it work see if you can get another one for the machine.

This may be caused by jammed pieces and build up like threads ,fabric, dust . Cleaning is the first key, to make sure. Also you could refer to your manual for trouble shooting .

Your sewing machine hand wheel has an inner wheel that you tighten for sewing and loosen for winding thread onto a bobbin. MAKE SURE YOU TIGHTEN THE INNER WHEEL TO SEW, or the needle will not move and will not sew. Check owner manual to follow the procedure for sewing and for filling a bobbin to understand what you need to do correctly. Good luck, and report back here how things went.
