Is this a new-to-you typewriter or have you been using it and this just started?
It really sounds like you need to discuss this with a tech and you need to identify the model as either a Secretarial or a Wordsmith and serial number if you have it.

Normally this happens when one of the keys on the typewriter is stuck it can cause the print hammer to do this. I would try and check to see if there are any keys that look stuck and are in the down position. If you can't find anything like this the next step would be to talk to a tech from the company or take it to a repair shop for service.
