My Smith corona typewriter that I got from a garage sale started smoking and smelling like burning rubber when I plug it in. None of the keys respond. How do I fix it or how much will it cost to get fixed?

This is an electronic board failure and the board is burning when it is plugged in. The rubber smell is the parts on the board or the carriage return that is burned. You will need to replace the electronic parts of the machine in order to get it to work again. This can be quite expensive and maybe you should consider getting a new machine. Check with a repair shop first to see how much this will cost and ask them if the machine is really worth fixing because of this electronic problem.
This sounds like your belt needs repair/replacement. You could try changing it out yourself. There are many videos online of this being done if you are not sure how.
Most likely this also happened to the previous owner - good reason to sell?
There are too many variables to diagnose without knowing all about the different parts on this machine but it appears to be an electrical short that caused this to happen and may have made it beyond repair.
You probably should take it to a repair shop and get an estimate of repair costs. Sears does repairs and will usually look at the item and provide a service estimate.
