Repairing an Antique Stereo Cabinet

An old record player. This is an old cabinet/console purchased by my Daddy for my Mom years ago. Well my Daddy died a few years ago and Mom gave it to me. Sound still comes out of the speakers and the turntable still turns but I need to get a needle to confirm that it will still play a vinyl. The radio will produce sound but the turner will not move. You can see it's broken. I have NO clue how to fix it.

My question is should i just throw it out-refurbish it or any other ideas!!! Of course it worth TONS to me but I don't think it's worth pouring money into. If I knew what I was doing I would repair myself in a heartbeat. Anyone want to help :)

If this means so much to you and belonged to your dad I would try and find a person in your local area and see how much it would actually cost to restore this unit. At times you can be surprised that the cost is very little then again it could actually be quite expensive.

There is a lot of old radio and stereo forums online that have experts who do this as a hobby. I would actually join a few of them and see if you can get some advice from them. Maybe you can get help from them on the forum and restore this on your own. They know all the best places to buy the parts needed to restore this unit. I would start there first and see what you can find out.

Also, try and advertise in your local area and let people know you are looking for a person that is or knows how to restore old stereo units. Ask them to take a look at this unit and give an estimate of how much it would cost to restore it. If the price is too expensive then you can always just post this online and sell it off for parts.

Since you do not have any experience with something like this it would probably be a better idea to discuss the problems and costs with people who do work on these all the time.

Before you ask for help you will need to know the brand name and model number. This information is usually located on the back of the console. You will also need a full picture of the console front and a close up of any names/marking on the back. A good closeup of the unit - from the top - take 2 or 3 pictures if needed to show all compartments.

There are loads of forums that are filled with people who seem to love helping someone who wants to fix up one of these and they know what questions to ask and can tell you where to start as well as a general idea of the overall cost to redo your console.

You will have to join before asking your question but pictures will be necessary as well as brand and model.
Don't be shy as if you decide to actually do this project you're going to need a lot of help.

May your father's memory always be a blessing. So sorry for your loss.

There are a ton of great videos on YouTube on fixing old electronics. Perhaps if you plug the make or model into the YouTube search you can find one to help.

eBay is a great source to buy the old needles.

Post back what you decide! Blessings to you!

Hi, was wondering if anyone could tell me about when my cabinet was made and if the cloth material is available anywhere. My cat decided it was a scratching post and ruined one side of it. Thanks!

I think it will be nearly impossible to match the fabric, but, if you're handy, you may be able to get at the backside of the fabric panels and replace both with a new fabric. Good luck and stay healthy.

I would think an upholstery shop would have the best material but the craft stores carry heavy fabric like this also.
Just be sure you buy extra material just in case you need to repair it again in the future.

But - you may want to check further since this material is hiding speakers and this type panel was usually made out of 'special' material so as to let the sound go through with more clarity.
You really should have what is called 'radio grill cloth' or something in that line.

Most likely this is not going to be a simple job of just 'replacing the cloth panel' so if you have never worked on items like this, I would suggest you think about reading some forums that cover this type of repair. It would also a good idea for you to join some of these vintage record player sites so you can ask questions as you have problems and need answers from members who know how to do all of these repairs and can provide step by step instructions.
You can check out the list below but you'll probably have to join several to find all the answers you're looking for. Be sure to ask about the brand (you will have to supply more pictures: pictures of the doors open, show record player and any other components, the back if possible, The plate on the bottom right side of your cabinet. Supply information on all components and if they are working as members like to know these things.
Someone on these forums will post everything relating to this console/cabinet.
You could start with these sites:
antiqueradios.com/.../viewtopic.php?f=7&t=264520
antiqueradios.com/.../viewtopic.php?f=6&t=269123
audiokarma.org/.../
forums.stevehoffman.tv/.../
www.hificlinic.com/.../
forum.audiogon.com/.../need-help-with-vintage-console-player...

As to age - looks like 70's to me as everyone was 'into' functional cabinets during this period.
Difficult to research but you could post a picture of the plate located on the bottom right (torn cloth panel) and that might help identify the brand.

Here is a link to the inside of the stereo unit. Here you can see that the stereo has different tubes that make the stereo work. picclick.com/PARTS-Vintage-Stereo-Console-Turntable.... it is easy to see when one of the tubes goes bad in the unit because the turn turns very dark on the top and around the sides. You can also take out the tubes and look at the wires inside the tube to make sure they are still connected much like a light bulb. If you have some issues with the stereo it is best to remove each tube one at a time and check the condition of the tubes.
