I'd like to repair this old chair for my granddaughter. What's the easiest and cheapest way? I am handy and love the DIY projects. I do not want to discard this chair as it is very special.

I have no picture of the chair. You can go to an upholstery store and buy the vinyl and do it yourself. Treat it like any material. It usually is stapled on the bottom. Use a heavy-duty staple gun.
I thought I uploaded a pic. Will try again. Won't let me add it here.
email it to images@thriftyfun.com and I will get it added to your request. Just put the request title in the email so I can match it up.
Can you share a photo? Hopefully your chair is a simple style like the ones I did.
I redid a bistro set of chairs by careful removal of the vinyl that I used for the pattern to cut new covers from old denim skirts that I affixed tobtge chair bottoms with a power stapler...like a contractor style that my friend's husband lent me. I was fortunate that the foam was in good shape. If you had to buy foam, you might find a big piece at a thrift shop. Just be sure it is clean and bug free.
My finished chairs were very sweet and the gal I gifted them to loved them. If I find a pix, I will post it. It was very inexpensive since I already had the skirts.
When doing a make-over like this it is usually recommended to carefully remove the original fabric so you can see just what you are dealing with.
It is usually recommended to replace the "stuffing" unless it looks absolutely pristine. This is also the time to decide if you are going to refinish the wood because that job should be done before the recovering of the cushion.
Make note of exactly how the covering is attached because you will want to follow that pattern as closely as possible. It is a good idea to take lots of pictures as you do any of this work.
The next decision is what type of material you wish to use for the covering. If you stick with the original then you should look for the very best you can find and decide on colors and design when you select your material.
Be sure to take the removed material with you when selecting so you will know how much you will need. Always buy 2 or 3 times as much as you need as it is easy to make mistakes and need another piece. This is also the best time to purchase any type of fastening products that you will need but you may want to add some sort of glue to your list also.
I have found the best place to buy fabric is either Michael's or Jo Ann's craft store but you may have a good fabric store in your city.
There are a lot of videos on YouTube that cover this type of project so you might find one or two that would be similar and could show you a trick or two.
A labor of love is always fun - hope your granddaughter can help, especially in choosing the color and design of the fabric.
