1 hour before going outside, eat some garlic....and don't wear any perfume!
Well the trick I grew up with was "Skin So SOft" by Avon. It was a skin softening lotion that the little buggers just didn't like and it was safe for kids (and kids liked it). I don't know if Avon's Skin So Soft is still made the same was because Avon decided to make money off of the "repellent" by making their own Bug Repellent using the same ingredients of the Skin So Soft.
The only repellants that really work are the ones that contain Deet. I prefer Deep Woods Off. I do not think the regular Off has a high enough concentration of Deet. I also have excellent results with the Off Lamp and with a product called ThermoCell which heats a little pad, like the one in the Off Lamp, with a butane cell.
I have not tried the latest Off product which you clip to your belt. It may work. The coils that you burn are also effective, but the other two previously mentioned products work better. There are no home remedies that work - including Skin so Soft, citronella candles, Listerine, or anything else. If they do work for you, then you don't have enough mosquitoes to bother with in the first place. Here in northern Saskatchewan, we know about mosquitoes.
Someone on this site in the past has mentioned using Listerine Mouthwash in a spray bottle. I haven't tried it, but they said it works.
My husband swears by the citronella coil bracelets. He wears them around his ankle when visiting our daughter in Florida - who lives next door to a canal...
Don't eat sugary stuff. It stays in the blood and mosquitos love it.
Living in Louisiana, the mosquito should be our state bird! : )
For mosquitos to be repelled by you there are a couple of things that work:
* Drink tonic water- The quinine comes thru your pores and repells.
For area control:
* Plant "beauty berry" plants
*citronella candles or torches
* dont let any standing water or puddles be in the area. This is breeding/hatching habitat!
* spray safe pesticide at dusk in the area you will bein the evening
