Replacing Tupperware With Glass

This may not go over well, but I have been getting rid of all my plastics. Instead, I have been saving all the glass pickle jars, jam jars, etc. I just didn't like throwing out all that glass. We are now a 2 person household, my husband and I. The Mt. Olive jars are just right for us. They hold a 2 serving amount of spaghetti sauce or beans. I cook a pound of dried beans and fill up jars and freeze. I wind up with 6 to 8 ready-made dinners. Just my 2 cents. Thanks for reading.

I have also been replacing "tupperware" with glass. It is healthier and glass does not need to be replaced from being damaged in the microwave every couple of years.

I have had only one glass "pickle" jar to crack and break in the microwave so far. So, lesson learned. I now defrost in the fridge overnight before putting it in the microwave. That was a mess of spaghetti sauce!

I agree! I never, ever cook anything in the microwave in plastic. I use only glass or ceramic. I also have my favorite glass jars for saving foods. I even bought ceramic jars for dry cat food as well and stopped storing any food in plastic.

One problem is the metal tops getting rusty, so I save the tops from jars that I do throw out so that I have spares when I throw out rusty tops.

Great idea! I also found that the parmesan cheese jar tops (the green ones) fit my Ball jars and other canning jars. Comes in handy for sprinkling...also plastic (sorry) screw tops from mayo jars will work also. Isn't this fun? Learn something new each day!

Oh my gosh!! I think I stole the parmesan cheese idea from lalala's post. I see it was posted in 2012. I'm embarrassed now! Please refer to her posts. It's really informative.

My dishes are Corelle ware which is glass and I use it in the microwave. I think your idea for switching to glass containers for storage is great!

I'm definitely going to start the switch. Thank you for sharing!

You're welcome, thank you for your comment. I use my Corelle ware also for just about everything. I bought them in the 60's while I was working, they're still going strong.
