My shower drain has been emptying slowly and after cleaning it I noticed the silicone around the metal drain has partly come unstuck. How do I replace it? I'm a novice and unsure if I put new on top or remove the old one.

Personally, I never mess with plumbing issues and it sounds like you have 2--the slow drain, and the seal.
There are lots of videos for replacing the drain:

This is just one of many, but it can be VERY challenging and you could easily make it worse if you, as you say, are a novice.
A plumber can fix both issues quickly and a good one will get it done right the first time. Ask if they offer coupons or discounts (ours does if we make the appointment online).
Hope you get this resolved quickly and easily!! Post back how it goes!!
Always remove old silicone before you put on new. The area has to be clean and dry and you have to keep it dry for 48 hours.
Hi,
The drain which is draining water slowly can be fixed by buying a new plunger and plunging the open drain while the bathtub has water in it, over the drain, while you plunge.
As far as the silicone, around the drain, I would consult a plumber and call and have them come out and give you an estimate on how much it will cost.
Blessings,
Robyn
