Measure the man's size hat, and calculate the number of stitches per inch. Then measure the child's head, and calculate the number of stitches you need. As it is tight-fitting, you don't need to have extra. Then work for about 4" before beginning decreasing. Work out your decreasing pattern by noting how many stitches you finished with on the adult pattern. You will want to finish with the same number of stitches. Subtract that number from the stitches you have been working with, and there you have the number of decreases you will have to make.
