My tip is simple: use the plastic bags from your wood pellets for trash! They fit in a large kitchen trash can. If you're like us, you use at least one bag of pellets per day, which equals a lot of trash bags! It saves us money all winter long, and often into the spring, since we don't have to purchase so many trash bags.

I buy several bags of wood mulch every summer for my flower beds. I save the bags and use them for trash bags outside. Everything goes into them--broken plant pots, yard weeds, acorns from our tree, cuttings when I trim my raspberry, gooseberry, and grapes, garden plants at the end of the season, wild onions that I dig from the yard, dandelions, dog poop, etc. They are strong and save me quite a bit on yard trash bags. If they have holes in them, I just use two. If I need to tie them shut, I use a zip tie. I also use empty bags from dog and cat food (which I buy in large sacks) as trash bags.
