Riding Mower Makes Noise When Started?

When I go to start my Murray 20 horse twin riding mower I hear a metal on metal clunk just before it starts. It only does it on the first start when it's cold. I can restart after it warms up and I don't hear the clunk. Does the starter have to be replaced?

There are several reasons why this can happen.

  • Your brake could be hitting the blade.
  • There is a problem with the carburetor.
  • The engine has a loose part inside. When it's hot the piece has expanded. When cold it makes the noise.

If this continues I would suggest taking the mower to the shop before it does some real damage to the engine.
