The bird's feet should encircle approximately 3/4 of the perch, with nail tips firmly touching the surface.

A general perch is somewhere chicken can sit, maybe have a quick nap etc. Unlike most wild birds and smaller cage birds, chickens hens sleep with their feet flat. They do not grip the perch. Chicken rest their feet solidly on the perch. 3-4 inches is generally a good size for most chickens. If you have bantams, then 1 inch wide roosting perch will be ok. But if you have a mixed flock, then make a mixture of perch sizes.
