Safely Storing Aerosol Cooking Oil Cans

July 6, 2011

Aerosol
Cooking Oil CanIt is extremely important that you never place a can of spray-on oil (like Pam or Bakers Secret) on, above, or even near your stove. The heat from the stove top can heat the can and cause it to explode. This will even happen when the can is on a shelf several feet above the stove. It doesn't take much heat and parts fly in every direction at very high velocity.

This happened at our church while we were prepping for a barbeque. We have a professional gas stove with a plate warmer shelf about 3 feet above the stove surface, and someone put 2 cans of Pam on this shelf. We saw them and reached to remove them when one exploded. Parts were found over 12 feet away wedged into a window frame. Luckily the second one was safely removed before it exploded.

Speaking from personal experience, it is an extremely frightening and painful event.
