Sauerbraten

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb. round steak
  • 2 Tbsp. margarine
  • 1 envelope brown gravy mix
  • 1 Tbsp. minced onion
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • Advertisement

  • 2 Tbsp. vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. ground ginger
  • 1 bay leaf
  • salt and pepper
  • hot buttered noodles

Directions

Cut meat in 1 inch squares and brown in hot margarine. Remove to side dish. In pan add gravy mix and water. Add remaining ingredients. Add meat and turn into 1 1/2 qt. casserole. Bake at 350 degrees F for 1 1/2 hours, covered. Remove bay leaf. Serve over noodles.

My sister and her family were stationed in Germany in the 1990s. She has shared a few German dishes with me. This is one of my favorite.

Years ago, I believe it was the early 70's, I found a recipe for Sauerbraten in a Ladies Circle magazine. I think it was the best one I ever tried, but during a move I lost a lot of my recipes. If any of you have it I would greatly appreciate it.

Are you sure it wasn't in Family Circle in 1978?

No, I know it was Ladies Circle. The one I'm looking for did not use ginger snaps. But yours sounds good I think I will try it out. Thanks anyway!
