Save receipts when you buy plants at Home Depot. My basil plant died a couple of weeks after I purchased it. Because I saved the receipt, I got a new one. I'm sure other places do this as well.

Yes, other places do. Lowe's will replace plants for up to a year. Even distressed plants that have been marked down. I think it's good policy. If the plant dies through no fault of your own, you should be compensated.
Often these places sell perennials that are not hardy to your area, but you might not know that. If they die, you can get a refund.
I have also found that Target and Walmart (even K-Mart) have a 1 year guarantee policy (in my area).
