This sunset photo with silhouettes of oat grass dunes was taken from the beach at St. George Island State Park in Florida. We took our first trip to the coast in October of last year.
My husband and I had managed to make it over 30 years without seeing the ocean, but now we can't wait to return! Our daughter (age four) often asks when we can go back and is very nostalgic about our time there. Our trip was centered primarily on birdwatching, and we added many new species to our life lists!
We saved a great deal of money on this trip (which also included Okefenokee Swamp and the northeastern coast of Florida) by tent camping some of the time in the very affordable state park campgrounds. We brought most of our food from home and only ate at restaurants 3 times in our 5 day trip, further saving us money.
The only drawback was that we had all of our camping supplies, wood, dry food, cumbersome birding gear, clothing, beach stuff, a large cooler and all of the usual travel items packed into a Ford Focus! Our bird guides and binoculars were sliding around on top of all that stuff which was mounded in every possible place, with our extra shoes jammed under the seats and towels poked into every possible cranny. It was a very tight and almost claustrophobic fit, and will lead me to be a much more prudent packer when we return this spring!

My mom was born and raised in Folkston, GA, in the Okefenokee area. I always thought it was hauntingly beautiful - glad I'm not the only one. (04/11/2010)
