I have a Sears 158-861 Model 84 sewing machine and it's just now giving me problems with the bobbin thread. As I am sewing the lower thread isn't catching with the top thread. I tried fixing the upper tension both increasing and decreasing, but it's just not working. This is the first time this has happened. I also tried changing the needle, but that's not helping either. What else can I do to correct this problem?

Make sure the bobbin has not been dropped in backwards.
Hi,
1. The bobbin thread needs to come out towards the left side.
2. The bobbin may not be securely locked into position in the sewing machine.
3. Take out the bobbin and clear out any lint behind the bobbin area.
4. Pull out a length of thread from the bobbin and cut it off. Reinsert the bobbin.
I hope these ideas are helpful!
Blessings,
Robyn
Is the thread new? Old thread causes a host of challenges including the issues you are describing. If it is new thread, then you can try to fix the screw.
Take the little screw driver which came with the machine and if it is too tight, unloosen it a hair OR if it is too loose, tighten it a little.
Mine looks like this:

The screw is in the top middle and adjusting it usually fixes issues.
Happy stitching!
