Are you doing a whole lawn? Somestimes seed companies have rebates on bagged seed. Just google the name of the different kinds and rebate and it sometimes pops up.
Then if you don't have a store credit card, some of the big box stores like Home Depot often give percentage discounts on the first card purchase so you can add that (I personally don't go this route because I don't want or need credit cards, but it does work).
If you are just trying to fix a small part, we had a place where the grass was encouraging on driveway so we cut it out and then replanted it where we had a part of the grass that was dirt when we had a tree removed. It took great and now looks like the rest of the grass. That was totally free!
Last suggestion...I have seen people on sites like Facebook local marketplace and Nextdoor.com offering rolls of sod for free or next to nothing because they are either removing it and no longer need it or got to many rolls when doing their yard. You could always put a WANTED note that you want sod!
Post back with what you decide.
The best time to seed the lawn in my area is in the early fall. Grass seed is on sale this time of year and that is when we buy it.
Often seed for lawns is on sale, plus rebate. Also if you start a account they give an extra 10% or more for your first purchase! Take your cash before 30 days and pay this account off. Giving you so much more savings. Now it's time to do the hard work!
