You should save the whole cans - food cans too and any other old metal you want to get rid of like saucepans or bent cutlery. Rinse them out and remove any paper labels. Spend a few months saving them up and separate them into aluminium and steel (use a magnet to tell which is which).

If you can, to save space use an old brick to bash them down smaller, but mind you don't hurt yourself or cut yourself on sharp edges. Then take them along to a scrap metal merchant to see how much you can get for them.
