I have 5 to 7 oak trees I want cut down. Can I sell them? I live in Whangarei New Zealand.

Removing trees is hard work and people usually charge for it. You might be able to advertise on Freecycle and Craigslist to give the trees away in exchange for taking them down.

It can't hurt to ask for a barter where someone takes the trees down to take the wood. I am sure it would depend on a lot of factors like the condition of the trees, location etc.

If you have a lumber yard nearby, ring them up and ask their thoughts. They may know of people who do such barters.

You could always barter them a totally different service...meaning you do X for them, if they do Y for you (which is take down the trees).

Just a thought! I have done a few barters in my time...the last one was NOT successful for me because I under estimated the value of my service vs. what I was getting, but others have worked out just fine.

Most likely you will have to pay a hefty price to have them removed. Cutting down those trees may require a permit so be sure to check that out before you do anything as most places (yours included) charge large fines if a permit was required and was not obtained before work was done.

  • You do not say the size of your trees and that might make a big difference in getting them removed.
  • Tree cutting equipment is costly and even costly to take to someone's property so the business would have to know they were going to make a big profit before they would even crank up the truck.
  • If permits are required, they would have to shoulder that cost also and generally permits are not cheap.
  • Cutting trees requires knowledgeable workmen and companies have to pay high insurance rates for their equipment as well as their workers.
  • Your insurance could also be responsible if anything when wrong, especially if someone was injured (this includes someone you barter with).
  • If trees are anywhere near a house/barn/shed/patio/driveway the cost would go up as they would be responsible if any of these were damaged.

This may also require special equipment/workers.
  • Even after the trees are cut there will be tremendous cleanup and this removal is also costly, especially stump removal.
  • I would suggest you get an estimate on having your trees removed and then you can decide if it is possible to sell them.
  • You can Google tree removal with your location.
