If you need sequins to decorate something not big, but do not want to spend money, then make sequins yourself from fish scales. You can also dye these sequins any color.
Total Time: Preparing of scales 2 hours. The time for making sequins depends on how many sequins you need.
Supplies:
- Fish scales of a big fish - I used ide (orfe, Leuciscus idus)
- Water
- Vinegar 9%
- Bowl
- Towel
- Dye
- Pot with boiling water
- Rubber gloves
- Spoon
- Paper
- Plastic wrap
- Compasses or similar-looking calipers or template of the desired shape
- Scissors
- Ruler
Steps:
- Soak scales in a solution of water and vinegar (in a ratio of 1 to 2) for 1-2 hours.
- Wash very good the scales in water until the slimy substance is removed. Then let the scales dry very good on a towel.
- Draw the outline of the sequins on the scales. You can make any shape and any size of the sequins. To make round sequins, use a compass, but better scratch the outline with a caliper needle. If you want to make the sequins of a different shape, then use a template.
- Cut the sequins along the scratched line.
- If you used the compass or the caliper, there will already be holes in the center of the sequins. If you used a template, make a hole in the center of the sequins with a compass needle or a caliper.
- You can dye the sequins in the desired color. Heat water to near boiling and pour into a cup. Shake the dye, add it to the water and stir. The more dye you use, the darker and more saturated the color will be. Be sure to read the coloring guidelines for your dye. Put on rubber gloves and soak the sequins in the dye solution. Let it sit in the solution for 10 min. Then remove the colored sequins and let them dry well on a paper.
