I have a Sears Kenmore 1347 sewing machine and when I turn it on, it runs fast, before I even touch the foot pedal? What causes that? Help?

Foot pedal jammed? Unscrew and check. If it is not that, then check you haven't a jammed switch. Look especially at the switch which you can set for the machine to go at a steady rate. If they seem to be OK, then the fault is probably electronic and needs a skilled mechanic.
Sounds like something might be stuck in the gear box or pedal, perhaps thread or a broken pin / needle. If you use canned air to clean your computer, give your machine a good spray in several spots: the foot pedal of course, but also see if you can get between the machine and the wheel (the one you turn by hand if you want to advance just one stitch at a time).
can you check to see if the switch is slightly pushed in? mayb e it is not totally off? might be best to go to get it checked out professionally, since it is of some value.
Sounds like the foot pedal is stuck.
