For St. Patrick's Day in my pre-k class, students learn the history of the shamrock. They get to study these three-leaf clovers outside on a nature walk and in the science center. There are also numerous art activities that I let them choose from. One of the easiest is a shamrock stencil painting. The children get to help make their own stencils and have fun painting with a new art material.
Total Time: 10-15 minutes
Yield: 1 painting
Supplies:
- finger paint (yellow and green)
- 2 small paint brushes (not pictured)
- 1 empty paper towel roll
- scissors
- 1 paper plate
- hot glue gun or tape
Steps:
- Cut three roughly equal pieces from the paper towel roll. Two inches long is plenty. Cut a third piece at least an inch long. Make sure one end of each piece is an even circle. Hot glue the longest three pieces together to form a shamrock.
- Dip the even side of the circle cluster into the green paint. Press it onto your paper to create any number of shamrocks. Use a paint brush to fill in any gaps and draw the stems. You can leave them like this or fill in the leaves, like my main photo.
- If you feel the page needs more color, add some gold coins with the smaller piece of paper towel that you cut. Once again, use the paint brush to complete the gaps in the circles. Leave them hollow or fill them in.
