Shiny Hair with Mayonnaise

Shiny Hair with Mayonnaise

Jenny, I thought I was the only crazy person who used mayo for conditioner! I came across this method purely by accident; when I was 16, I worked as a carhop at Sonic Drive Inn. One of the cooks thought it would be funny to dump a tub of mayo on my head. Well, it was the beginning of my shift so I had to go 7 hrs with the mayo in my hair. Later, I washed it out and my curly, coarse, thick, dry, and abused hair looked fantastic!

Now I do a "treatment" once every two weeks and I leave the mayo on all day. It's cheaper and works much better than salon products. To those who haven't tried this method, be sure and use real mayo (like Hellman's or Best Foods and not salad dressing (like Miracle Whip). Joni (08/24/2004)

If you have oily hair try using a can of flat beer instead. It gives you the shine without the greasy effect of the mayonnaise. (10/04/2004)

I heard that Mayo makes the hair smoother and softer. I was like "whaaat? mayo? Ok it's good on sandwiches but on your head?" But later I found out that singer, Avril Lavigne used mayo in her hair, for a straighter and soft look.

I searched this in google and found out from average people that it works! I'm thinking of trying it out myself, but just one question. Will the no-name brands of mayo have the same effect as the more popular brands? I only have the no-name brand in my house right now, and I want to use it in my hair asap. (01/11/2005)

I wet and towel-dried my hair, slathered it with kraft mayo and put a plastic shower cap over it. I left it in for one hour, rinsed it out well, shampooed, and used regular conditioner. As it dried, my hair was so soft I couldn't believe it. Also my winter dandruff was gone. I couldn't stop running my hands through my hair! This was two days ago, and i'm about to try it again, can't wait! (02/02/2005)

Shiny Hair with Mayonnaise

Seriously, if you'r thinking about trying the Mayonnaise, do it. I have thick wavy hair and before I started using it every time I came out of the shower my hair would dry into a frizzy and weird tangled mess. I still dont' use shampoos instead I smother every single hair on my head with mayo - wait about 1/2hr - 1hr. Then rinse out with warm/cold water (mustn't be hot or mayo could set) for a while and then apply a normal conditioner to the hair that gets rid of the mayo and doesn't destroy my hair like ALL shampoos unfortunately do. The end result is hair that is so shiny that i'm kinda confused what the hell this ball of light is doing on my head.

The more I've read about treatments like this the more I've found out that natural products are the best.
The reviews you get for chemical shampoos, conditioners etc are all mixed some say good, some say really useless. I've never heard/read anyone complain about natural products such as Mayo or Vinegar. In fact probably about 99% go insane about how great it is! (05/17/2006)

It is a great tip for, but not for baby fine, slightly oily hair ;) The vinegar works better, but I have never tried the beer...have mixed feelings about that! (05/17/2006)

To get rid of the smell, you should add about tablespoon of imitation vanilla/vanilla extract and an egg. It works just the same, and it smells like ice cream! (07/12/2007)

Wow, I did this last night. Except I kept it on my hair for 3 hours. It worked wonders. My hair is overly processed and really dry. Not anymore. Shampoo'd it out, then used conditioner like usual and the results were worth the trouble. The trick is to wrap your head with a plastic grocery bag, put a paper towel underneath by the nape of your neck to catch the oil that drips, then wrap a towel around the bag like a turban. I've tried the regular mayo but couldn't deal with the smell. Now I use use organic root hair mayonnaise and it works great. It's non-greasy and no smell.

After reading all these posts, I thoroughly expected this trick to work. It didn't! My hair looks and feels exactly the same, if no frizzier. I did exactly what people said to do so I'm a bit confused. Does it only work on certain hair types? I have normal thickness, brown hair. (08/01/2007)

My step mom used this method and her hair was the shiniest I have seen in my entire life. It looked like one of those hair commercials where the girls hair is all smooth and shiny. I was so shocked how shiny it was I had to try it myself and it is in my hair right now! Everyone, let me just say it works! =] (08/02/2007)

Do not use light mayo- use real mayo - Best Foods is best- it is the cholesterol in the mayo that makes the difference. Yes vanilla extract works for the smell, but don't use a lot- the alcohol in the extract counteracts the cholesterol. Another option is to mix fresh egg and olive oil to make home made mayo- only use this if you have thick coarse dry hair- may make thin hair oily- attached is a picture of how shiny my hair got after using it. Yeah, I've heard about this method from my grandmother. It's the best. The other day I went to the salon with my hair already washed and "mayonnaised", and the lady that usually dries my hair started asking what fantastic shampoo I used this time. LOL. I was to embarrassed to say mayonnaise in front of many people, but it really does marvelous on your hair. XOXO (01/23/2008)

Mayo does more then just create shiny hair, it does work 100%. It pulls chemicals from your hair, such as perms, It releases nutrients to your hair hair, and if you do some mindful mixing of 2 tbs of Mayo, It's of ketchup, and 4 ts of baking soda in a bowl until the mixture foams, then apply from root to tip, throughout you hair.

You hair will grow, I did this to combat my mothers hair loss, and in the course of 1 day, her hair started to grow about 1/4 of a inch over night, and continuing to grow over 4 days, after which I applied more of the mixture. Sadly she decided to put a perm/relaxer in her hair again and it fail out again. The mixture does not smell like Mayo or ketchup in the least. I've only tested the mixture on African American female hair, no I take that back, so AA, and/or Native America, which is a Asian grade of hair.

I do not know the effect of this mixture on Male, or other grades of hair. But it does work, as long as you do not introduce further chemicals to your head. If you were going gray/ are gray while balding, allow at least a inch of hair to retun before dying. Please allow at least 4 to 5 inches of hair growth before applying a relaxer/perm, and only allow a professional to do so, so if your hair does fall out, you can seek compensation in the court of law. Shiny Hair with Mayonnaise

This was the worst mistake I've made since the first time I dyed my own hair. It stripped the hair color out and now my hair is blonde again (with my dark brown roots). My hair was very soft because I cut off about a foot of hair so all that was left was healthy. I wanted to ump it up a little more so I tried this last night. My hair is now fried like I bleached it again. It's puffy and coarse and looks horrible.I am very unhappy. (05/31/2008)

Thank God for mayonnaise! I had an allergic reaction to black hair dye. My whole face got extremely puffy and to add to the nightmare my beautiful black hair was fried. I was so upset I stayed at home for two days. I came across this site and applied the mayo to my dry and unwashed hair. I left it in for ten minutes then washed it with pert plus. My hair is back! What a relief. I am going to get it trimmed today in force the healthy shine and softness. It works, It works, It works! (06/04/2008)

Shiny Hair with Mayonnaise

Hey, okay I'm 14 right? Usually I don't trust what people say on these things, and I think the like person who made mayonnaise or cellphones or whatever they are advertising are saying good things. I got two tablespoons of mayonnaise, an egg, cinnamon. It smelt so bad! Then I left it in for like 15 minutes. I shampooed and conditioned after I rinsed it out. I let my hair air dry. It wasn't AS frizzy but it was and is shiny. I over use my hair with like the hair straightener everyday, so the mayonnaise thing worked! I was just dancing and I looked in the mirror, ha! I can't keep my eyes off my hair! It still smells a bit, but I'm sure another shower will handle that! (06/14/2008)

I'm replying to whoever wrote this, i did everything you said, I mixed it all in a bowl and now its in my hair waiting to be washed. I have a plastic bag on with a towel wrapped around my head. I was thinking I'll leave it in for about 3 hours? I'm not really sure how long you'd recommend though. Should I do more or less? How much did you use on your moms hair? and how often did you do it? Also, if you had your hair died jet black, will the ketchup take it all out? ah, please reply. I need answers fast. (06/26/2008)

Mayonnaise really doesn't work.
it just makes your hair stink.
i tried it and if anything it made my hair worse.
Regular heat treatments once a month and taking care of your locks such as using protection when heat styling and getting a trim every month does the trick.
It does with me anyway. (07/12/2008)

I mixed 1 tbs of mayonnaise with a about 2 tbs of my conditioner and kept in in for about 15 mins. I have very dry and brittle hair and was desperate for something so I took a chance when I used the mayo. Needless to say my hair is shiny and doesn't look so brittle anymore. (08/21/2008)

I use plain mayo and it works. I use this as an extra treat because i ONLY use natural products . I use henna for colour and ghassoul to wash and condition. For those who do not know what ghassoul is, its volcanic earth from morrocco ( pronounced rhassoul). Its then dried in the sun and packed in 500 gram paper bags. I do NOT use anything else. You mix as much as you need with hot water, let it stand and add more water as necessary, then put it thru your hair and wrap with a warm towel. You can leave this for 10 to 20 minutes ( I leave it longer if I want to watch a tv program for example). Then just rinse out. When you first use this with longer hair you may want to rub a bit of moisturizer ( yes) as a leave-in conditioner for first few weeks but results are fantastic!!! It makes your hair look ten times bigger! And beautifully soft. I use this about 2 times a week.If anyone wants to contact me personally for more help, please do juliablanche at orangedotnl (09/03/2008)

Shiny Hair with Mayonnaise

I just tried this, I only buy light mayo, and used that. I applied it to my dry hair, and as suggested by another forum I added a little shampoo to the mix to help with rinsing and the smell, I let it set for 25 min and rinsed with cold water, then showered as usual, and shampooed and conditioned. It has slightly more shine than usual, I think I should have used Real Mayo, I'll buy the fatty stuff next time and update. However, whether it was the light mayo, or the shampoo additive. My hair does not smell!

Thank god, I have to work in 2 hours! Sally Beauty Supply offers a product called Hair Mayonnaise Damaged Hair Treatment that sells for $8 I might just try that instead, seems to act just the same as mayo. Has anyone tried this? (09/17/2008)

I will try it tomorrow and sit out in the sun with it in for a long time and everything! I cant wait. I will reply back tomorrow after I use it. (09/23/2008)

This is an old hair conditioning style, African Americans have been using this for years to strip perms. It works, my aunt would mix it with an egg and honey and press our hair when me and my cousins were young we had long black shiny bouncy hair. She also used beer as a conditioner. I forgot about this technique until now. Organic Stimulator has a hair mayo, but nothing beats home made. I am using honey, mayo, and olive oil to grow back my hair. Damage hair needs moisture and these three are bound to work. Thanks for the reminder. (09/24/2008)

I'm fifteen and I have bleached my hair blonde a million times and now it is breaking right in the middle. So underneath my hair is short and the rest is long right now. I'm doing the process actually right now. I used the only available mayonnaise in the kitchen and it's only mayo magic. I don't know if this one works since this is not the real mayonnaise which people here are talking about. Hi everybody, I was the first one to come up with mayonnaise in hair. And yes it grows hair faster and longer. That's if your doing it the right way it's not just mixing ingredients and putting it on your hair. If you really want to know email me : miss_lil_jezz AT yahoo.com

Shiny Hair with Mayonnaise

My hair is damaged and dry due to overusing the straightening iron. I used the treatment today. Applied it to my hair, put a plastic bag around it, and a hot towel over the bag. I then rinsed it out with cold water and showered as usual(but double shampooed!). I used a little bit extra conditioner so it would smell good and some leave in conditioner when I got out. I let my hair air dry and it looks like it did 3 years ago, before all the damage. Its shiny and soft and I'm considering wearing my hair natural to school tomorrow, which is a big deal. This works. Shiny Hair with Mayonnaise

My hair was absolutely fried! In the space of 2 months, I dyed it red twice, bleached it twice and dyed it brown 4 times colour wouldn't take after bleach). On top of that, I straighten (and blow dry) all the time so as you can imagine, my hair was dead. It had NO life left. Then I saw about mayonnaise and I tried it today. My hair hasn't been this soft and shiny since I was 13! The smell was awful but worth it! (12/05/2008)

Shiny Hair with Mayonnaise

Applied Mayo and one egg mixture to hair. Waited thirty minutes with plastic bag covering my hair and a towel on top. Rinsed with very cold water for a good while, my hair is somewhat thick so it took about fifteen minutes total. Rinse, shampoo, condition, and last but not least rinse real well again because of the left over mayo funk. And thus my hair is shiny and very soft. (12/10/2008)

RE: Shiny Hair with Mayonnaise

Shiny Hair with Mayonnaise

First, I put a clean towel in the dryer for a while. I put half a jar of generic, store-brand mayonnaise in my dry hair (I have heard you should never used Miracle Whip, etc, only the real deal - the more fat, the better when it comes to hair). I also put one whipped up egg in. I wrapped my hair in Saran wrap and wrapped that in a hot towel. Left it on for an hour while I surfed the web.

Went into the bathroom and rinsed it and rinsed it with cold water (just above freezing). Once I was sure it was pretty much all out, I carried on with my regular hair care: Matrix shampoo, Aveda conditioner, Chi finishing serum.

In the shower, I was worried, as it felt a bit hay-like. But as I smoothed the serum through after shampoo and conditioner, it felt better than normal. I had to let it air dry because I was in a hurry, but the hair definitely looks and feels better. It has been very frizzy and dry. I obviously still badly need a haircut with all my split ends, but the rest of the hair looks really good. Definitely better than any of those manufactured "leave-in" treatments. (12/20/2008)

I love using mayo its the perfect "de-tangler" for my thick ,coarse and nappy hair. I usually mix it with a little olive oil. I've just recently used it with egg. However, I never thought of using the warm towel until reading it here.
Needlessly to say, my hair is not silky smooth due to my African heritage however it is way more manageable and less coarse then before. :)

I have almost black short hair. I have been using jell stuff which seems to be drying it out and making it dull. I really want to try mayo. I have read all the feedback posts. Why do you need to rinse with cold water. I can't imagine rinsing my head with COLD water. Also, do you shampoo after you rinse off the mayo. I liked the idea of mixing the mayo with some conditioner. So many different techniques...not sure which one to use. (02/18/2009)

Shiny Hair with Mayonnaise

I tried this, and shampooed twice, then put conditioner in for 10 minutes afterward, and finally rinsed in cold water. Shampooing twice helps get the smell out all the way, and conditioning adds more shine and moisture. Rinsing with cold water seals the cuticle and helps your hair to keep the shine. Just after the first treatment my hair already looks healthier and doesn't get tangley and flat as quickly as before. Thanks! :) (07/26/2009)

Shiny Hair with Mayonnaise = WORKS

I tried this thinking it couldn't hurt as my hair was totally fried from bleach. It got to the point that after washing and conditioning, I couldn't get a brush through it to dry it. It felt sticky and stretchy so I had to rough dry it and tie it up.

I only had Mayonnaise Light, so I added some Olive Oil and mixed it up. I wet and dried my hair, slapped it on and left it for about 1 and a half hours. Washed it out, shampooed it twice and used my normal conditioner.

I used my normal style protector spray before drying and it was easy to get the brush though it. It still needs a trim and the ends are still ever so slightly fluffy but it is 80% better than it was.

Can't believe the amount I have spent on intensive conditioners in the past when I have had this in the fridge all this time! While I was sat there with mayonnaise on my head I thought I might as well put on a face mask. So I went to the kitchen and mixed up some porridge oats and honey and covered my face, neck and chest. I used it as an exfoliate when I washed it off. My skin was glowing and soft! It's unbelievable how good these cheap treatments are. Totally recommend them. (08/07/2009)
