I would love to purchase an older set of the Book of Knowledge for my boys. Any suggestions on how I can find one?

Put an ad in your local kijii or freecycle or put up a notice at your local grocery store bulletin board or at your church. You could also contact the local school libraries to see if they still have them (although most will have tossed them out by now, I would expect). I would not offer to pay for these as you must be the only person in the world who wants them. You can not give them away to any charities.
