I can't get the typewriter to come on or make any noise at all. Yes I've plugged it in and turned on the power button. Help! What could cause this?

The on/off switch may be broken.
I love the sound of a typewriter! I am so happy to hear that people still use them! Sorry yours is not working.
This site has manuals, maybe there is a troubleshooting section in the manual:
site.xavier.edu/
I have yet to try the site yet...have some things on the list I want to...they say they offer free advice which includes typewriters:
www.fixya.com/
This one offers advice for typewriters also:
typewriter.boardhost.com/
If it turns out you need a part, I am always shocked at how many parts are up for grabs on eBay. It actually started a new little cottage project for me deconstructing broken items and selling them. I have not had the courage to do a typewriter yet (it seems a bit sacrilegious)....but I have sold off broken dolls for parts.
I believe your typewriter, Silver Reed ex-30 is one of the first machines so if it has not been serviced in a while that may be just what it needs.
