I am looking for a simple cape pattern for a toddler that is 2.5 years old. I purchased 1 yd of material.

After washing and ironing ( if necessary), hold the material in half. Then fold it in half again so you have something nearly square. Pin a piece of string to the corner where all the folds are and tie a piece of chalk to the other at the length you want the cape. Draw and then cut along this line. This should give you a circle when unfolded.
Cut along one of the folds to the center and cut a neck sized circle there. Cut the left over material into a strip about 1 1/2 to 2 inches wide. This is your edge binding. Attach the edge binding to the raw edges of the neck circle, the front opening and around the bottom. The binding around the neck can be a separate piece with long ends to make a tie.
If my directions aren't clear, make a pattern from paper first. Newspaper makes a great pattern. Good luck
Chloe's suggestion is great, but if you decide you want more pictures and patterns, try the sewing pages at about.com. The guide there has posted several patterns available free online. You download the pattern, print it, tape it together on the clearly marked join lines, and cut away. Instructions will be on the page you find the pattern-make sure to print that too.
