My machine will not catch the bobbin thread. I can feel the gear below moving and it pushes up on the bobbin and when I first pulled the bobbin out the holder seemed to not be in the correct place. Is this something I can fix or do I need to take it to a repairman?

Is the bobbin in backward? This is usually what happens to me.
The other thing that I have problems with are old thread that when wound to the bobbin won't pull up right. I usually have to pull it out and use that thread for hand stitching (I can't bear to waste it).
Also check that there is not a thread clump stuck somewhere. That can also cause this issue. Never use canned air in this area as it makes things worse. A good brush usually does the trick..brush toward you, not away to get the gunk out.
Bobbins are a bugaboo no matter what machine you have, and I find it best to test every scenario first before calling the repair man....it is usually one of the top three and once that is resolved you will be G to G (good to go)!
Make sure the bobbin is inserted correctly. Download the manual if you lost it.
There may be some "hidden" clumps/threads that are keeping your bobbin from working properly or as Pghgirl said, you may have the bobbin in wrong.
Here is a link to the manual and instructions on the bobbin are on page 62.
If you need to print this manual be sure to just pick and print the English and not all the other language pages.
