The repair man is asking for too much; more than I paid for the sewing machine. I've tried a few things like timing and cleaning that I've got from YouTube, but still it only does a straight stitch. What else can I do?

I have a couple things that help with my Kenmore when this happens. First is to try a different top and bottom thread (new thread). I have had issues with some threads not working on anything but straight stitches...and with those they pull and break. Sometimes thread gets old and plays havoc with the machines.
If it is good thread, try rewinding the bobbin...sometimes if it is too tightly wound, it won't zigzag.
Last thing is to very carefully clean around all the buttons and dials and make sure that it is clicking into place properly. Sometimes lint gets in and the dials don't complete the click to turn on the stitch.
If you do these, in addition to the other things you tried, you may need to have the repair person fix...but shop around...maybe there are other people other than the person you spoke to. I have had good referrals from the gals that work at my local JoAnn fabric...sometimes they know private folks that fix machines and work much more reasonably than the ones from the brand.
Good luck and happy stitching!
If there is no thread blockage and your machine is oiled, you may have to reset the timing. Instructions are here:www.hunker.com/
