I have a Singer 7258 sewing machine. When trying to wind the bobbin, it stops after just a second and shows error code E2. It looks like the needle is not disengaging. Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm heartbroken. I have been waiting 3 years to start quilting for my grandchildren. Thank you!

The error code is for a bobbin error that means it is in the machine wrong. Here is a trouble shooting guide that will walk you through all the steps to get the bobbin in the machine correctly and get rid of the error code. It is an easy fix and should not take long to do this. www.ehow.com/
I have this same exact problem with a brand new machine.
The answer provided by poehere does not address this issue.
The bobbin is not installed *in* the machine when threading the bobbin! I have scoured the web looking for any clue as to what is going on, but nobody seems to have an answer.
Hi. i was just wondering if you were able to resolve this issue? Just happened to me
Same problem with my 7258. Hope I am not causing damage, but I found that if I pull out (away from machine) on the hand wheel the whole time while pressing on the foot pedal to wind, it will disengage the needle and wind the bobbin. It squeals a bit but it works. I was desperate to use my machine so hopefully it will not hurt it. Seems to be sewing fine. Try at your own discretion.
This was very very very helpful. I've spent hours trying to fix the problem and i did as directed and it is the only thing that works. thanks
Genius! Thank you. Worked like a charm with no squealing.
Thank you Wheatback58. I dont know how you figured out the pulling out on the hand wheel trick, but it worked like a charm for me so I dont have to wind my bobbin by hand lol. THANK YOU FOR SHARING!
I had the same issue pn a patchwork model. what i found to be the problem was the bobbin winder was not disengaging the needle. it was just gummed up. i took the covers off and oiled the handwheel.
This worked for me but I have wasted so muh time with a machine that clearly is actually not working properly. The manual doesn't even mention an E2 code. I will never buy a singer sewing machine again. I have had no end of trouble.
Thank you thank you thank you! I've had this machine for years and occasionally had this problem, it usually fixed itself when I reset the bobbin. Today it would not work no matter what I did. Thankfully holding the hand wheel while I wound worked for me!
It is a bobbin threading error. Make sure you are following the manuals directions. You can download a manual online if you do not have one
Sorry to chime in so late on this one. I'm guessing you resolved this problem the way that almost everyone does - by buying a different machine.
You are correct that the needle not disengaging is what's causing the error. When the bobbin winder is shifted over to wind the bobbin, the rest of the machine remains engaged as well. This happens when these machines sit for long periods of time without being used. The parts basically gum up and stick to each other.
This happens with my wife's machine. The most obvious work around is to wind the bobbin with something else, as the machine will still sew fine. (If it errors when trying to sew, make sure the bobbin threader is shifted to the left)
The second work around is simply grabbing on to the set screw for the needle and preventing it from moving when the bobbin is threading. This may be very easy to do, or it may be very difficult depending on how much your machine is gummed up.
It's not very hard to do on my wife's machine, so we haven't gotten around to properly fixing it yet. I'm guessing that doing so would just require some time and oil, but I'm not sure.
I removed the needle then held it stationary while in the bobbin winding mode. Yeah it worked although I think it needs to professionally cleaned , bobbin case did seem gummed up!
Thank you topdeadcenter.
Held the needle set screw and it worked!!
This has happened to me recently. Have had the machine several years and get it cleaned regularly, as well as cleaning out the batting fuzz every week myself. This is my work horse machine. When I get an E2 error, I turn off the machine for at least 10 seconds and re-thread from the spool to the bobbin winder.
OMG this is stupid.
SO.. I go on and off the pedal to make it work.
If I try many rotations it stops again screaming E2.
I tried stopping the needle and the turn handle and that doesn't work.
I found that a number 2 pencil's eraser will hold onto the inside of the bobbin perfectly. I the put the pencil in a cordless drill and threaded that baby in about 10 seconds! Hahaha
