First time poster here! So excited for this opportunity to ask a question. I've done my research. I know that a king quilt takes 40 fat quarters, how many will it take to make a 'California' King?

The standard size for a Cal King size would generally be around 72 inches in width and 84 inches in length, so it is both 4 inches narrower and 4 inches longer than a regular king mattress homeguides.sfgate.com/
So, for California King (74" x 84")
Comforter 12 in drop will have 96" x 96",
Coverlet 16 in drop: 104" x 100",
Bedspread 21 in drop: 114" x 105"
It includes a drop that hangs over the mattress on 3 sides. Add 10 inches to length if you want to have a tuck for the pillows.

The regular king size is 98 by 106 and the California king is 102 by 106. I would just add one more row of squares to make it long enough
These sites have some good info for making a cali-king quilt. Every mattress is different....so you should measure the mattress, as well. California King mattresses are narrower and longer than a King. It also depends on how much 'drop' you want your quilt to have, as well. Cali-King quilts can range in all different sizes...from 100" x 98"- 114" x 117" - 105"x 120" - 115" X 130"...depending if you want more of a comforter or a bedspread.
