Snakes in Cellar?

I found a nest of about a dozen snakes on my cellar steps, first time in 25 years. I called a professional and he set traps. They were empty. Now they're gone. Why were they there, where did they go, will they come back? I live in Ohio.

Do you have any rodents in your cellar or house? This would attract snakes. Or it could be the mother snake was searching for a safe, dry place to lay her eggs. I bet your cellar fit the bill.

Snakes can get through very small holes and cracks. If you want to deter snakes and rodents, have an "energy audit" done on your house. As houses age they become less energy-efficient. You can save money on bills and find leaks that are letting heat out and critters in.

It is interesting to note that there are 32 species of snakes that are native to Ohio, but only three of these 3 species are venomous. So don't worry too much.
